Things to Do in Mestia | Non-hikers Guide to Svaneti
Understanding Svaneti Region
Located on the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains, Svaneti is surrounded by breathtaking 3,000-5,000 meter-high peaks and is home to the ten highest mountains of the Caucasus, with Shkara standing tallest at 5,201 meters, followed by Tetnuldi (4,974m), Shota Rustaveli (4,960m), and the iconic Ushba (4,710m).
Svaneti is divided into two parts: Zemo (Upper) and Qvemo (Lower) Svaneti. Zemo Svaneti lies along the upper Enguri River, with Mestia as its cultural center, while Qvemo Svaneti is located along the upper Tskhenistskali River, with Lentekhi as its main town.
Despite Georgia being invaded by numerous nations throughout history, this region remained largely untouched. Its remote location, combined with a harsh climate and lack of accessible roads, made it difficult for enemies to reach.
As a result, many of Georgia’s national treasures have been preserved here for centuries and are now proudly displayed in local museums. These unique factors have also protected the rich Svan culture and traditions.
Svaneti has its own language, Svan, part of the Kartvelian language family, alongside Georgian, Megrelian, and Tushetian. Interestingly, the Svan language is quite different from other local languages – I personally can’t understand a word!
