The younger generation in Bishkek typically speak English but most of the adults (40s and older) do not. They typically speak Russian and Kyrgyz, the national languages of Kyrgyzstan.
The Water:
Most sources will tell you that the tap water in Bishkek is fine but that your body may react poorly to the different bacteria in the country. I decided that I didn’t want to risk feeling poorly so I drank bottled water but didn’t bother with bottled water for brushing my teeth, etc. It’s a kind of compromise and I was fine. All this said, I would not drink the tap water in the countryside if you explore outside of Bishkek, even on day trips.
Time of Year:
Bishkek is beautiful all year round but if you can I recommend visiting in the fall and spring to get the best hiking and weather. The summer is very sunny and hot (June - September) with temperatures around 35 C. If you visit in the summer, consider spending more time in the mountains. Bishkek can be very cold in the winter with temperatures around -10 C. The winter also has the worst air pollution due to coal burning for heat.
Getting from Bishkek to the City Center:
I arrived at Manas Airport (the main Bishkek Airport) at 2am from Istanbul and therefore decided to pay the USD 70 to have a hotel airport transfer waiting for me. It was about a 30 minute drive to the Bishkek City Center.
Taxi drivers were everywhere when we landed even at the early hour. You should expect to pay 1,000 som (USD 10) for a transfer during normal hours but they will charge surcharging for off-hours.
Safety:
I felt extremely safe in Bishkek. The only time I was worried about pick-pocketing was during a visit to the bazaars. This said, it's always important to stay vigilant about your safety.
