Best Markets in Mexico City
Best Markets in Mexico City
There are over 300 markets just in the city. Basically one in every neighborhood, they are a part of locals daily life and our traditions.
Most markets are located in brick and stone buildings, but a variation calles "Tianguis" is what could be described as a pop-up market, with removable stands and interchangeable vendors.
Normally tianguis take over a street on just one specific day of the week, whereas mercados (markets) are open daily roughly from 9am to 5pm.
Here's a quick guide of some of the main tianguis & mercados in the city
Mercado San Juan
Go to San Juan to get the extra-clean experience. Here you can get some of the finest, more expensive Mexican ingredients, as well as imported good such as Italian cheeses and French cured meats.
Mercado Jamaica
This is composed of 2 big buildings. The newest one includes the biggest flower market in town wchich is open 24 hours.
Food and daily goods can also be found.
Mercado de la Merced
This is the second biggest market in the city. Full of aisles, composend of 6 different buildings and you can basically find everything you'd ever need.
Open every day of the week and it's easily accesible via metro. Be careful with your belongings.
Mercado El 100
The name comes from the principle that everything has to come from within a 100 miles radius. Our first and more important farmer's market.
Only here on Sunday mornings.
Tianguis de la Condesa
This pop-up market will only be here on Fridays from 9ish to 5pm.
Locals and neighbors gather to buy goods that range from ingredients and foods, to plants and small furniture.
Tianguis de la Lagunilla
This flea & antique market will only appear on Sundays. To dedicated collectors this is a dream. But great food is also to be found as well as the unmissable micheladas with a cup full of tamarindo and chile rim.
Mercado Medellín
This is a special one out of the 300 in the city, due to its location right next to an area full of south american immigration. The ingredients you can find here are nowhere else to be found. Sodas from Perú, arepa flour from Colombia, root vegetables from Venezuela and coffee from Cuba.
Pretty manageable size to explore on your own.
