πŸ‡°πŸ‡ Welcome to Cambodia πŸ‡°πŸ‡

Cambodia is a country located in Southeast Asia neighboured by Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Which is known for its ancient temples, tropical landscapes, and resilient culture. The Kingdom of Cambodia offers an incredible mix of history, nature, and tradition, making it a destination not to be missed.

The Essentials

β˜€οΈ Weather

Β Cambodia has a tropical climate, with two main seasons:

Dry season (November to April) – The best time to visit Cambodia, with sunny weather and less humidity.

Wet season (May to October) – Characterised by afternoon showers, especially between June and September. However, the countryside becomes lush and beautiful during this time.

🧧 Money Matters

Currency: Cambodian Riel (KHR) and US dollars (USD)

The US dollar is widely accepted, especially in cities and tourist areas. Prices are often quoted in USD, but smaller transactions are usually made in Riel.

Credit cards are accepted in hotels and restaurants in major cities, but cash is still king, especially in markets and rural areas. ATMs dispensing both Riel and USD are widely available.

πŸ’¬ Language

Official Languages: Khmer

English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, especially in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. Learning a few Khmer phrases will enrich your experience and interactions with locals.

πŸ›œ Connectivity and Wifi

Wi-Fi is widely available in most hotels, cafΓ©s, and restaurants, particularly in cities and tourist areas.

SIM cards are affordable and can be purchased at airports or local shops. Cellcard, Metfone, and Smart are the main mobile operators. Data plans are inexpensive and useful for staying connected on the go.

πŸ”Œ Plug and Sockets

πŸ†˜ Safety and Emergency Numbers

Police: 117

Fire: 118

Ambulance: 119

Cambodia is generally safe for tourists, but be cautious of petty theft in busy markets or tourist hotspots, and use hotel safes for valuables.

Travel and Transport

πŸ›« Air

Cambodia’s main international airports are in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, connecting the country to major Southeast Asian hubs. Domestic flights are available but not necessary for short-distance travel.

🚝 Public Transport

Buses: An affordable option for traveling between cities, with several companies offering air-conditioned buses. Night buses are available for long-distance routes.

Tuk-tuks: The most common form of transportation in cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Negotiate the fare before your journey, or use ride-hailing apps.

Taxis: Available in cities and at airports, though they can be more expensive than tuk-tuks.

Boats: In areas like the Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake, boat travel is a scenic and relaxing way to get around.

🍲 Food and Culture

Cambodian cuisine is fresh, flavourful, and influenced by its neighbours, particularly Thailand and Vietnam, but it has its own unique characteristics. Here are a couple of must tries:

🍲 Amok – Cambodia’s national dish, a creamy, fragrant coconut milk-based curry with fish or chicken, often steamed in banana leaves.

πŸ₯˜ Lok Lak – Stir-fried marinated beef, served with rice, fresh vegetables, and a dipping sauce of lime and black pepper.

🍀 Bai Sach Chrouk – A simple yet tasty dish of grilled pork served over broken rice with pickled vegetables and sometimes a fried egg.
