Venice's Long History

Venice has a long and deep history as one of the most powerful empires in the Mediterranean. As a premier ship building culture, it was a great trading partner in medieval and Renaissance Europe with an extremely formidable navy. Its location at the end of the Silk Road. from China, Venice was a cosmopolitan that found its fortunes in luxury trade from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

But it started to decline in importance in 1457 after Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks, whose expansion would threaten and later seize many of Venice's eastern lands. Finally, the Venice Republic came to an end in 1797 when Napoleon and his French army took control of the city.

In 1866, Venice became part of the Kingdom of Italy. In the late 19th century, Venice once again flourished as a port, and later as a manufacturing center.

* There are 150 canals and more than 400 pedestrian bridges

* Venice has more than 450 palaces (palazzos) and important buildings spanning many styles from Byzantine, Baroque, Gothic, and more.
