Day 1

9:00 AM - White Water Rafting

This is a full-day activity with a stop for lunch, which is normally included. You will be rafting for 4-5 hours in the river and if you are lucky you will see wildlife around (Toucans, sloths, iguanas, white face monkeys).

Make sure you wear comfy clothes that you don't mind getting wet, and water shoes. You are going to end up completely wet! Also make sure you have dry clothes for the way back.

6:00 AM - Alternative Rafting suggestion

If you've rented a car and you're off to La Fortuna from San Jose, consider another option: rafting on Rio Pacuare. It's in the opposite direction however is renowned globally as one of the best rafting destinations. Its remote location provides an immersive experience in nature, with challenging rapids cutting through dense jungle scenery.

If you're seeking a more remote and intense rafting adventure, Rio Pacuare might be the better choice. You can kickstart your day with some adrenaline-pumping fun and then continue your journey to La Fortuna.

20:00 PM - Dinner&Cocktails and Live music

I can assure you that you'll be exhausted after a full day of rafting, so I wouldn't recommend booking any other activities for the day.

Lava Lounge

Affordable local food and live music, great to have some cocktails as well.

Day 2

7:00 AM Hanging Bridges

If you're keen on spotting wildlife, I'd recommend opting for a guided tour. Animals can be elusive, making it challenging to spot them without the expertise of a guide.

12:30 PM Lunch Pollo Fortuneño

This place is my favourite spot for lunch in La Fortuna. The food is incredibly tasty, locally sourced, and reasonably priced. Plus, they offer an excellent selection of cocktails

Be sure to ask the waiter for recommendations on local specialties; they're incredibly helpful. We followed their suggestion (on my video bellow), and it was absolutely delicious!

14:00 La Fortuna Waterfall

You absolutely can't miss out on visiting this waterfall in La Fortuna! Be sure to allow plenty of time since it closes at 5:00 PM. Don't forget to pack your swimsuit; despite the chilly water, it's perfect for a refreshing dip.

Just a heads up: there are 500 steps to conquer! But trust me, it was absolutely worth it for me.

Top tip: while guided tours are available, it's more budget-friendly to grab a taxi from your hotel (especially if it's in central La Fortuna) and explore the waterfall independently. No need for a guide; it's a straightforward visit!

18:00 Baldi Hot Springs

Perfect for relaxing after a long day exploring. They offer various dining options within the resort where you can enjoy food and drinks. I've saved for you an alternative place for dinner, in case you fancy having dinner in La Fortuna after coming from your relaxing bath.

Tip: If you want to go straightaway for dinner after the Hot Springs, please note lockers are provided to leave your clothes and you can have a shower there before you leave.

Extra Activities

Here are some additional activities I came across while I was in La Fortuna, that are offered (although I didn't personally try them). I thought I'd mention them here in case you have more time to spare or if any of them catch your interest.

Arenal Volcano Park Hike

Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal
@gem.ontour
This is a hike around the base of the volcano, hiking to the summit is restricted. However, the hiking offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and provides an opportunity to appreciate the volcano's natural beauty.

Arenal volcano is visible from everywhere in La Fortuna (as long as is not cloudy), however this is a great choice if you like hiking.

Gravity Falls Waterfall Jumping

If you're up for an adventure and craving an adrenaline rush, this is the perfect choice for you. (I personally didn't try it, but they offer guided tours from La Fortuna).

Perfect for budget travelers, this hostel in the heart of La Fortuna offers basic accommodations at around £16 per night. While it's not luxurious and the rooms show some wear, it's a fantastic spot to meet fellow adventurers. Enjoy a lively bar next to the pool, ideal for evening swims and chats. Plus, you can easily book guided tours directly from the hostel upon arrival. You can book on booking.com below:
