ZAGREB

Every year Zagreb is so beautifully decorated for Christmas that it is almost more worthwhile to see it during the day than at night. Of course, the lights also add their own charm, but during the day it's quite kitschy in a positive way. I recommend a whole day trip. Stop for a coffee in the Christmas decorated Bar Finjak, full of nutcrackers, and then continue across Ban Jelačić square, which is decorated with a beautiful Advent wreath, where one candle is lit every Advent Sunday. After that, I prefer to walk past the market and to the church of St. Mark, where the front yard is adorned with a huge spruce with really nice ornaments and nut trees and a mouse king. From there, the path leads you to what I personally think is the most beautiful part of Advent decorated Zagreb, named Advent at Klovićev dvorim. Treat yourself to germknodel on stands or mulled wine, and enjoy a Christmas spirit.

SAMOBOR

Samobor is quite a small place, but you can make a quick stop when visiting Zagreb. The square is decorated with a large Christmas tree and all around the facades of the houses are decorated with Christmas decorations. The most beautifully decorated is Hotel Livadić, located on the main square. The hotel has a decorated facade and also the inner part of the courtyard. Many people come to the cafe for coffee or tea, and some also for dessert, as they are famous for their very good cream puffs.

OPATIJA

Opatija is a discovery of last year. I would never have thought that a seaside town could be so beautifully decorated in a real Christmas fairy tale. Indeed, one of the most beautifully decorated cities and a walk by the sea is a real balm for the soul. Plus, decorating lasts a little past the New Year, so even if you don't manage to make use of the December days, you still have the beginning of January. And be sure to treat yourself to some fritters which add smell and taste to the Christmas atmosphere. Another suggestion: if you have time, stop at Trsat Castle and Rijeka. It’s magical!
