Local foodie’s guide to Jakarta 🥘🍛☕️[Full version]
Tips on dining out in Jakarta
🔸 Make reservations ahead if you can so as not to be disappointed, as opening hours can be unpredictable. This can be as simple as finding their WhatsApp number online and dropping them a message.
🔸 You’ll notice I haven’t recommended any street for options below. 🙅♀️ Frankly, as someone who lived in Jakarta for three years, I can’t in good conscience recommend that passing travelers attempt to eat street food. Push carts (known as ‘warung kaki lima’) often don’t have easy access to clean running water so you can’t always be sure how sanitary the food is. As a tourist, surely you wouldn’t want to let food poisoning ruin your trip!
🔸 Indonesian food is known to be spicy so if you can’t tolerate spice, “minta tidak pedas” (not spicy please), will be your favourite phrase. Don’t worry about asking for the less spicy version, Indonesian food is full of flavour so I’m sure you’ll still enjoy it.
