🇮🇹 Explore the Dolomites: Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

Cortina d’Ampezzo is one of the best towns to use as your base for exploring the Dolomites! Known as a playground for the wealthy, there’s plenty to do in the town that won’t break the bank too. I’ve included several restaurants that won’t break the bank as well as a few worth a splurge. There’s a ton of great hiking and skiing around Cortina, including some without needing a car. This guide is more focused on hiking- I don't include ski runs here. On this guide, you’ll get: - the major sights with notes on what you’re seeing and if they need advanced booking - an interactive map to help navigate you to each spot - 5 of the major hiking areas or views, along with advice on how to get there - 7 restaurants at varying price points, along with a breakfast spot - 2 shops you’ll want to see - 1 3-star hotel

It should be no surprise then that there’s plenty of ski culture here! It’s one of those ski towns that attracts the wealthy, but people are also walking around in their workout/hiking/ski gear. This is unusual in Italy, but given why people visit Cortina, makes sense.

Hiking Areas near Cortina d’Ampezzo

Tre Come is arguably of the best-known hikes in the region. Tre Cime translates to Three Peaks and the name will be obvious from the photos.

There are two main ways to experience Tre Cime. One is obvious: hike it! There’s a trail that circles them, covering about 6 miles. It covers a decent amount of elevation gain/loss, but the tricky part is that you’re already in such high elevation that breathing can be a bit tougher. Make sure to bring plenty of water and snacks!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Amateur Italian, travel advisor, and adventurous eater! I’m a travel creative living in small town northern Italy, and I've been planning travel for over 15 years. I've lived on three continents and visited over 40 countries, so I'm passionate about helping travelers experience the best of a location, no matter where! I love both/and travel: I want to see the big sights AND the local hangouts, the big cities AND the small towns. I’d love to help you do it too! If you’re going to Rome for the first time, you don’t need me to tell you to see the Colosseum. But you might want me to tell you if it’s better as a guided tour or on your own, what add-on’s are worth the money, and what are the extra secret things your ticket can get you! My favorite part of travel is eating well: finding the local haunts, tasting a new wine, and trying the local dishes. Amazing food doesn't have to be expensive: sometimes the best of a place is in the street food! But if it is a splurge, I'll make sure it's worth every penny. I'd love to work with you to create the trip of your dreams!
