Tokyo Airport Transport

Tokyo Airport Transport

When taking a flight to Japan, you will likely either land at Narita or Haneda Airport in Tokyo. Here's a short summary of how you can get from each of these two airports to Tokyo Station. Tokyo Station is on the Yamanote Line and one of the main train stations in the city. From Tokyo Station, it’s very easy to reach other major train stations or any place in Tokyo. The Yamanote Line is the primary train line in Tokyo and is one of the easiest ways to get around.

Arriving at the Airport in Tokyo

Both airports provide every service you could think of, including free Wi-Fi. Below, you will find a list of different websites and apps you can use (either in English or Japanese) to look up train routes in Tokyo, including your route from the airport.

♦️ Apps and Websites for Transit in Tokyo

In English

Jorudan / Norikae Annai

Hyperdia

In Japanese

Yahoo Navi

If your Japanese is not proficient, you might want to use one of the English apps or websites. However, if you can navigate in Japanese, my number one recommendation would be Yahoo Norikae Annai, as it is the most reliable app regarding prices and routes.

From Narita Airport to Tokyo

Narita Airport is further away from Tokyo, making it a bit harder to reach (and it can also be more expensive). However, it offers more options for international flights, and if you are not flying to Tokyo often, you might not mind the longer train ride, during which you can enjoy the scenic views of the more rural areas around Tokyo. Getting one of the Ekiben (station bento boxes) might also be a nice experience.

📌 Wi-Fi: Narita Airport provides free Wi-Fi access points in all terminals and on terminal connection buses, along with many other services.

📌 Transfer between Terminals: To transfer between terminals, you can use one of the free terminal shuttle buses. For details, please check their website.

How to get to Tokyo Station

♦️ Rail:

1. Narita Express Line: This train can bring you to Tokyo Station, as well as to Shinagawa, Shinjuku, and Shibuya station, among others.

Cost: 3,070 JPY for a normal seat, 5,340 JPY for a Green Car (incl. tax)

Duration: 53 min from Narita Terminal 1 station to Tokyo Station

2. Keisei Skyliner: Operates between Narita Airport Terminal 1 and Keisei Ueno Station or Nishi Nippori Station.

Cost: 2,570 JPY one way (incl. tax); Duration: about 40 min

From Keisei Ueno Station or Nishi Nippori, you can easily transfer to other stations in Tokyo.

3. Taking the JR Lines: While it will take more time, this option can also save you money.

Example routes:

Narita Airport (Keisei Line, rapid) to Keisei Funabashi Station (7 min walk) to Funabashi Station (JR Sobu Line, rapid) to Tokyo Station: about 1h 50min, 1,144 JPY

Narita Airport (Keisei Narita Sky Access Line, express) to Higashimatsudo, then Musashino Line (JR) to Tokyo Station: about 1h 35min, 1,426 JPY

Narita Airport (Keisei Line, rapid) to Keisei Narita Station, then (Keisei Line, express) to Nishi-Nippori: about 1h 20min, 1,042 JPY (JR Keihin Tohoku Line to Tokyo Station adds about 12 min and 157 JPY)

Narita Airport (Keisei Line & Sobu Line, rapid) to Tokyo Station: about 1h 35min, 1,342 JPY

♦️ Bus:

Direct Bus: You can take a bus from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station, with connections to other main stations.

Duration: about 1h 40min; Cost: 1,300 JPY (2,600 JPY after 11 PM)

You can purchase a ticket inside the airport at ticket counters, but you will need to buy a ticket for a specific time slot, as seat reservations are not possible.

Limousine Bus: This option costs between 2,800 and 3,200 JPY (to Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station). You might get a discount if you book in advance online.

♦️ Taxi: Narita Airport is served by standard public taxis (metered fare) and fixed-fare taxis. If you want to save money while in Tokyo, I recommend avoiding taxis, as they can be very expensive.

A taxi ride will take about 1h but costs more than 20,000 JPY.

An extra fee for the highway may apply, so sharing a taxi could be a more economical choice.

From Haneda Airport to Tokyo

Haneda Airport is generally easier and cheaper to access. It is an incredibly convenient airport and has much more to offer than other airports. You should check out their website for more details, but to give you an idea, Haneda Airport features a variety of restaurants and shopping opportunities, making it a great place to spend at least a whole day. It has a Robotics Lab, an observation deck, its own shrine, the Nihonbashi Bridge (originally designed for Haneda), and an area called “Sky Road,” where you can try out flight simulators. If this doesn’t sound exciting, I don’t know what does!

📌 Wi-Fi: Haneda Airport provides free Wi-Fi access.

📌 You can find an interactive map of Haneda Airport on their website.

📌 Transfer between Terminals: At Haneda Airport, you have several options to transfer between terminals: free shuttle buses, the Keikyu Line, Tokyo Monorail, an underground passageway, and transit ramp buses.

How to get to Tokyo Station

♦️ Rail:

1. Monorail: Take the Monorail from Haneda Airport Terminal 1 to Hamamatsucho Station.

Cost: about 500 JPY; Duration: 17-23 min

From Hamamatsucho Station, you can take the Yamanote Line to Tokyo Station for 160 JPY (ca. 6-7 min) or reach other major stations in Tokyo, like Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ikebukuro.

2. Keikyu Line: Another option is to use the Keikyu Line to get from Haneda Airport to Shinagawa Station.

Cost: about 300 JPY; Duration: 22-30 min

From Shinagawa Station, you can easily take the Yamanote Line to any major station in Tokyo.

For example, to get to Tokyo Station, it costs about 170 JPY and takes around 13 min.

♦️ Bus:

1. Limousine Buses: A ride costs between 900-1,000 JPY to Tokyo Station (Yaesu exit) and takes about 40 min.

2. Night Buses: The cost is double the usual fare. Compared to Narita Airport, there are fewer buses from Haneda, making the train a more attractive option.

♦️ Taxi: Taking a taxi from Haneda Airport to Tokyo Station costs about 7,000 JPY and takes around 30-40 min.
