Discover Clermont-Ferrand
Annie Kattapuram
Clermont-Ferrand, located in the heart of France's Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a university city with dramatic volcanic landscapes and a lively atmosphere. Come for hikes and stay for the vibrant energy with many live events and festivals throughout the year.
Here are my recommendations for a kid-and-dog friendly visit to Clermont-Ferrand.

Notre-Dame of Assumption Cathedral
@anniekatt
This majestic Gothic cathedral stands in Clermont's historical center. Built over the span of seven centuries, the Notre Dame del'Assomption Cathedral stands out because it was built using black volcanic stone. The dark colour also highlights the vivid stained glass windows and murals. Entrance is free.

Chaîne des Puys
@anniekatt
A chain of more than 80 dormant volcanoes, the Chaîne des Puys is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The highest point along this mountain range is the Puy de Dome. Other hiking / biking paths include the Puy Pariou, with its crater reaching a depth of 90m. There are a few caves hidden along the sides of the volcano. The Sarcouy caves can be found on the eastern face of the Grand Sarcouy volcano and are the easiest to access.

Panoramic Domes
@anniekatt
Puy de Dome is the most visited volcano in the Chaîne des Puys range. It stands 1465m tall. There are two options to get to the top: hike roughly 3 hours each way or take a 15min train ride. For both options start at the car park of the Panoramique des Dômes.
I recommend taking the Cog Railway to the summit. The train winds around the mountain so you can enjoy breathtaking views of the snow capped mountains. Dogs are allowed on the train. It is freezing cold at the top so don't forget your winter gear as you explore the summit. There are cafes, a weather observatory and the ruins of the Temple of Mercury. If you are feeling particularly adventurous you can paraglide off the summit of Puy de Dome.
Once you are done exploring the top, there are a few hiking paths to come back down to the car park. The shorter path is about 2 hours, with a few steep paths, but little walkers can still conquer it. There are ample places for stopping for a break along the way.
