Where to stay:
Besides Strasbourg, most of the small villages on this itinerary are located south, near Colmar. With that in mind, I'd recommend either finding a place to stay in Strasbourg for 1 night and spending the other 2 nights in Colmar.
Or you can base yourself in Colmar for the whole visit and take a day trip to Strasbourg. Your day trip can be done by train (which takes roughly 30 minutes) or using a car rental (which takes roughly 1 hour).
