About Orcas Island

Orcas Island, part of the San Juan Islands in Washington State, has a storied past. It was originally inhabited by Coast Salish Native Americans and later settled by Europeans. The logging industry thrived on the island in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The San Juan islands, including Orcas, were the subject of a territorial dispute between the United States and Great Britain in the mid-19th century. This dispute, known as the "Pig War," was peacefully resolved in 1872 and was given to the US.
