The Duomo is home to some of the most beautiful art masterpieces, such as Ilaria del Carretto’s Tomb by Jacopo della Quercia and the Volto Santo (a wooden crucifix of the Holy Face, ancient symbol of the city).

Piazza dell'Anfiteatro
@daniellecohen
The main and most characteristic spot in Lucca. The Roman Amphitheatre or Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is a true jewel from Roman times. As you stand inside the oval square, you can see the buildings were built around the original elliptical structure typical of Roman amphitheatres long ago. While the amphitheater no longer exists, the square has maintained its unique shape and takes us back in time to when the Roman colony sat here. Many local restaurants and shops look onto the square where, especially during summer, events and concerts usually take place.

The third Sunday of every month, check out Lucca's beautiful market here.

Guinigi Tower
@daniellecohen
Coming out from the amphitheater, walk toward the famous Torre Guinigi standing tall nearby — it's unique due to the trees at the very top of the tower. It requires a lot of steps to climb - but has a beautiful view from the top. The roof garden is a popular attraction and was built when the Guinigi family created a garden as a symbol of the town's rebirth while under their control.

^ The Guingi Tower has lots of steps to climb, so maybe not for everyone.

Buccellato - The origin of this name comes from the Latin word ‘buccella’, which means, mouthful.

If you get hungry or tired and need a snack, try the famous Buccellato from a bakery.  This pastry is a semi-sweet bread with raisins and is a typical product of Lucca.

Garmugia- A soup of spring vegetables and pork. It's said that this was not like the typical peasant food, and instead was a soup for nobles, given the presence of meat in it.

Frantoiana soup - A soup rich in vegetables, beans, Savoy cabbage, potatoes, courgettes, fennel, black cabbage, leek and pumpkin. It is traditionally accompanied by stale bread left to soak. It is said that this soup was served to the labourers who took part in the olive harvest, using ‘novo’ oil for the occasion.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ciao! My name is Danielle and I'm a Californian from San Diego, who's been living full time in Florence, Italy since 2020. I studied in Florence in 2016 and absolutely fell in love with the food, culture, and history, and made it my mission to move back. I moved right before the pandemic, and staying here through all the lockdowns and pandemic life really helped me discover slow travel and find all of Italy's beauty, including lesser known gems, and off the beaten path travel spots. During my three years in Florence, I have wrote for publications like The Florentine, done freelance marketing with restaurants and a travel agency, giving me high insight into the best destinations, foodie spots, and more. I am here to help you make the most of your vacation in Italy with curated itineraries for every type of traveler and digital maps to help you enjoy THE BEST food each region has to offer. Let me do the work so you can just relax and enjoy, without any stress! I've had a very unique experience living in Italy the last 4 years, as I made my official move right before the pandemic, after visiting for years. Because of this I learned to travel locally and deeply throughout the numerous incredible destinations in Italy and for that I cater my travel services to finding the most local and mindful experiences, keeping true to discovering and appreciating Italy's culture.
