Kochi, the vibrant port city in Kerala, is a glorious mix of cultures, history and flavours.
As someone who returns home every couple of years, I love visiting the local restaurants to have authentic Kerala meals - from the fresh seafood coated in spices to the best vegetarian dishes and coconut-based curries.
Whether you are after a traditional sadhya, delicious biriyanis or fusion dishes, Kochi has something for everyone.
In this guide I have included:
- great authentic restaurants that I have been to
- recommended dishes
- family friendly rating for each place
everything that makes me appreciate food and my home culture.

This restaurant has a slight arty feel with tall ceilings and scenes from Malayalam movies painted on the walls. It is popular with the locals because of the reasonably priced food and the wide variety of veg and non veg dishes, so it can get busy during meal hours.
Must try: Kappa (boiled cassava / tapioca) and fish curry; flaky Kerala parotta and beef
Family friendly rating: 7/10. Service can be a little slow, and the bathrooms are decent, but clean. There is plenty of space between the tables, so you have some privacy. Good variety of local juices on the menu.

Grand Pavilion
@anniekatt
Another restaurant that we used to go to when I was a kid and serves delicious meals even today. They have a few dishes from around the world, but I have always preferred their Kerala dishes.
Must try: Kottayam style beef fry, Alleppy fish curry, Dum biriyani
Family friendly rating: 8/10. Their menu covers Kerala, Northern India, Asian and Western dishes, so there is enough of a variety for even the pickiest eaters.

Paragon Restaurant | Lulu Mall | Kochi
@anniekatt
This is my mom's go-to place when she wants to eat out. It is located inside Lulu Mall, and is almost always busy because of its location. There is ample space, AC rooms and a wide variety of typical Malabar (along the coast of Kerala) cuisine.
Must try: Fish pollichattu (fish wrapped in banana leaves) and the milder Fish Moilee (fish cooked in coconut milk). For dessert, have the tender coconut pudding.
Family friendly rating: 9/10. Paragon has a big dining space and clean facilities. Their large menu includes a few Indo-Chinese dishes. There are plenty of dishes to cater for mild to spicy tastebuds.

Brindhavan Restaurant
@anniekatt
Another one of my mom's fav places. This is a fully vegetarian restaurant serving typical Kerala meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Must try: appam and curry, and the thali meal.
Family friendly rating: 7/10. It is clean, with good service, but expect it to be busy during peak meal times. They have A/C rooms and washrooms.
