Race Information

Starting Line

The half marathon starts at 8AM and the marathon starts at 10AM at Potterrow on the University of Edinburgh Campus. The bag drop is next to the start, and there are also lots of toilets.

George Square Gardens

While the race technically starts on Potterrow, George Square Gardens is a great location to put in Google Maps, as this is the warm up area, bathrooms, and bag drop.

Finish Line

You'll finish the race at Pinkie School in Musselburgh. I would suggest picking a meeting spot with supporters before hand as the cell service is horrible at the finish.

Getting Back to Edinburgh

If you decide to opt out of the buses provided by the race (the fastest and most expensive option), I would suggest catching a train back to Edinburgh Waverly Place from Musselburgh Train Station or Wallyford Train Station. They are both about a mile from the finish line giving you a nice cool down walk. I'd suggest walking to Wallyford, as it will be the first station to pick up runners so you'll have a better chance of grabbing a seat.

Cheer Spots

This race has two options for Cheering spots that your friends and family can wait at. I would recommend starting in the city, and then making your way out to the finish line area.

Option 1:

This is an 18 minute walk from point A to point B and will allow you to see your support squad 3 times before they leave the city.

Option 2:

This is option also allows for three passings of your support squad, and if they are fast, maybe even four. It's a 25 minute walk total. They can also do the middle option only from one end of High Street to the other.

Hotels in Edinburgh

YOTEL Edinburgh

A modern hotel just a few blocks from the Royal Mile, this location is a great choice if you'd like to walk to the start.

Kick Ass Grassmarket
@jetsetting_runner
This pod hostel is a great option for solo travelers who don't mind sharing a bathroom. I've stayed in many pod hostels before races and find they tend to promote a quiet atmosphere instead of a typical hostel party scene.

Point A Edinburgh
@jetsetting_runner
This hotel near the center of Edinburgh is a clean and simple option for people who want a nice location without breaking the bank. A bit further from the start, but still walkable.

Ocean Mist
@jetsetting_runner
This unique boutique hotel is located on a boat in the Leith Harbor. It's about 40 minutes by public transit to the city center and the start, but Leith is becoming a trendy part of Edinburgh if you want to do something different on your trip.

Activities in Edinburgh

Option 1:

I took this tour of the Scottish Highlands when I was in Edinburgh and loved it! You get to see so many gorgeous places and the Hogwarts Express. I would recommend packing your own lunch so you can eat on the bus rather than at the overpriced cafeteria they bring you to.

Option 2:

If you love caves, this is a great tour. Edinburgh is built over a series of tunnels that have been used for everything from good to morally questionable over the centuries.

Option 3:

Whenever I travel, I always trust the location scouts. What do I mean by that? If there has been a TV show filmed near your destination, add yourself to a tour of filming locations. They're always gorgeous. Even if you have never seen the show, you'll enjoy the views.
