Antarctica- Your Ultimate Travel Guide

Why Antarctica
Embarking on an Antarctic expedition is a journey to the edge of the world, where pristine landscapes and awe-inspiring wildlife await. Antarctica, the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, is a place of unparalleled beauty—a vast wilderness of glistening icebergs, snow-capped mountains, and crystal-clear waters. This otherworldly landscape is home to resilient species like emperor penguins, Weddell seals, and majestic humpback whales, all thriving against the odds in one of the most extreme environments on Earth.
Whether you’re crossing the Drake Passage, photographing massive glaciers, or standing in a colony of curious penguins, an Antarctic expedition will forever change the way you see the world—leaving you inspired, humbled, and in awe of the planet’s natural wonders

How to get there?
By far the most popular and cost effective way of reaching Antarctica is by boat. There an an abundance of companies offering different types of voyage to the frozen continent, this guide will help you break down which one is right for you.
The other option is (believe it or not) to fly there. This is now an option, not widely available but it is doable if you know how. There are a few companies that will now fly you over the Drake passage to save a potentially nauseous crossing, the Drake is known for its unpredictable and sometimes extreme conditions.

Choose the right boat
One of the most important factors about an Antarctic voyage is the type of vessel you choose to go on, the size, style, age all make a difference, and each expedition company has a take on this. When booking this type of journey for any of my clients the first thing I do in ascertain their preferences for travel, for example do they prefer a more luxury style? Fine wines? Wildlife watching? Science based? There is a voyage out there for everybody, and working so closely with all the many different expedition companies out there I an advise you on which voyage would suit you. There would be nothing worse than choosing the wrong voyage and not enjoying this once in a lifetime trip.
Where to start?
Starting in Ushuaia in the Tierra Del Fuego province of Argentina your journey will begin.
Nicknamed the end of the world Ushuaia lives up to its name, its remote but truly stunning. My advice is to have a couple of nights here before you embarke.
For a luxury option the Arakur Resort and Spa is a great option, set in the hillside above the town with unrivaled views its a spectacular place to stay. Leonardo De Caprio stayed here when filming The Revenent.

For a more modest option the Albatros hotel is centrally located

Take time to explore Ushuaia and the surrounding area, the national park is beautiful and you can start to see the real beauty of Patagonia
Please see below a couple of local tours that may interest you
The national park
The 'Post Office at the end of the World'
My main piece of advice for Ushuaia is do not worry about seeing penguins- you are going to see so many when you are in Antarctica! spend time seeing the beauty of the landscape- its will be very different on the white continent
Where to eat?

If you are not staying at the Arakur then please visit there for food- the restaurant La Cravia there is beautiful and the view is stunning!

The Journey Across The Drake
There are two common phrases that pass people lips when they talk about the famous crossing over the Antarctica where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans meet, either the 'Drake Lake' or the 'Drake Shake'. I have personally experienced both!
In all honesty, weather can change so quickly so it important to be prepared for both scenarios. Take sea sickness precautions, i personally find the small herbal patches they you stick to the skin just behind your ears the absolute best ones to use- you just have to change them every couple of days, whereas tablets you have to remember to take every few hours......
