Northern Beaches

Newport to Palm Beach

My first recommendation up north starts with this adorable walk between Newport and Palm Beach which can be completed either by car or public transport. When I went with friends, we had taken a train then bus from Sydney earlier in the morning, giving us time to really explore the beaches. The walk itself is alright if you have the right shoes or are used to walking but please take care as it is not all concrete and therefore may not be suitable for less athletic people or people with slight mobility issues. Although I really enjoyed the hiking portion with its stunning views of the nature and ocean, the beaches are also lovely to visit by themselves as they are significantly less crowded than the ones closer to the city. If you do the hike, I recommend taking a bus between Avalon and Whale Beach as there isn't much to see between them. Finally, a must-see once you're up at Palm Beach it the lovely lighthouse with a view of the two beaches splitting the ocean in half. Please be aware there aren't many food options so make sure you bring water and food especially if you have any particular dietary requirements!

If you have time for a day trip and enjoy hiking, I definitely recommend doing the Newport to Avalon Beach hike before making your way up to Palm Beach for some absolutely stunning ocean views on a sunny day.

Lovely beach with an equally cute cafe to stop and have a drink. Slightly smaller than the surrounding beaches but very cozy and filled with locals!

Avalon Beach

The last beach before getting on the bus to Whale Beach to head to Palm Beach, a lively beach at times but that always provides the space to sit down and relax.
