Munich Daytrip: To Weltenburg Abbey

Munich Daytrip: To Weltenburg Abbey

This guide includes an itinerary, logisitcs, and details for a daytrip from Munich to Weltenburg Abbey. Weltenburg Abbey is the oldest monastic brewery in the world, and has, in my humble opinion, some of the best beer garden beer and food I‘ve experienced in Germany.

Unfortunatly, unlike most of our daytrips, Weltenburg Abbey is not accessible via public transportation. You will have to rent a car from Munich via a rental company or the ShareNow app.

Kelheim

Park in the Wöhrdplatz, and pay the parking fee. Begin walking uphill through the woods to the liberation hall.

Liberation Hall

This memorializes the victory over Nepoleon in the Wars of Liberation. Enjoy the monument and views, and continue along the wooded path following signs to Weltenburg Abbey.

Aussichtspunkt

Take pictures at the Aussichtpunkt of Weltenburg Abbey nestled into the crook of the Danube River. Continue down to the shores. There will be a small boat to ferry you across. Bring cash. The fee is around two Euros.

Weltenburg Abbey

Stroll around the Abbey, and check out the church before having lunch in the courtyard. I recommend trying their Boch Beer and Eierlikör cake.

Ferry

You can walk back the way you came or take the ferry. This allows you to see the Danube gorge from a new angle.
