I have been studying in Leiden for the past two years and have fallen in love with the city! Leiden is one of many student cities in the Netherlands but arguably the oldest, historic and most fun student cities of them all!
Here are all of my recommendation for a nice time in this beautiful city xx
Leiden is a small town and therefore most places are within walking distance! The old city center is enclosed by its signature canals with conserved historic buildings lining the water.Ā University buildings are spread through the city center, which is always busy with students!
To navigate the city like a true Dutchie I would recommend renting bikes. To best experience the city I would definitely recommend going on a boat tour to experience the city from the water!
When walking around perhaps you'll spot the poems on the walls of buildings spread throughout the city.
Leiden is also known for its preserved historic gates. These can be found along the borders of the outer city canals and are often accompanied by nice cafes and restaurants.
The National Museum of Antiquities is housed in an old monumental building. It is the Dutch centre for archaeology and a large part of the collection consists of objects related to ancient Egypt.
Unique is the two thousand year old Egyptian temple in the central hall of the museum. Besides ancient Egypt, the museum covers the Middle East, the Classical world and the early history of the Netherlands. The entire collection consists of more than 80,000 objects, including statues of Roman emperors, Etruscan tomb finds and mummies.
Rijksmuseum Boerhaave is the Netherlandsā treasure chamber of science and medicine. What were the major discoveries in the history of science in the Netherlands? Who were the researchers behind them and how great is the impact of their discoveries on our lives today?
This beautiful garden is filled with exotic flowers and plants! You will catch many students here for a stroll and to sit down in the grass for a break.
