Surfing, Sipping and Sleeping in Byron Bay
Byron is well known for its laid back, hippie, surfing town vibe where you have no option but to put your feet up, relax, and have some well deserved downtime. This guide will help you to plan your trip, so you get a good balance of sightseeing without stressing yourself out with all the planning.
Activities
I would advise choosing 1 or 2 of these activities a day to embrace the beach town chill vibe - you don't want to be busy constantly.
Sunrise Hike
One of the best things I did here was watch the sunrise from the lighthouse. The sky erupted with colour and I was lucky enough to watch a mamma whale teach her baby calf how to jump out of the water. The walk back is also a great spot to find wallaby hiding in the trees and some bush turkey kicking about! This is also a great spot to visit the most Easterly point in mainland Australia.
The hostel I was staying at organised a morning shuttle to the lighthouse and once the sun was up you can walk back through the trees and spot some wildlife, take in the views and do a photoshoot at the base-jumping pad (please be careful on this as it is a fair drop down if you lose your balance!!).
Surfing
Of course you can't go to Byron Bay and not surf. Many hostels or accommodations will offer free surfboard hire, but it may be worth booking a couple lessons to make sure you know the safety behind it and learn some tips and tricks from the experts.
- Private lessons 1-on-1 for around $185
- Group lessons for around $79 for a half-day
- from $80 for a Group Lesson for 2hrs
Guided Tours
If you like to learn about the place you're staying in, a tour is the way to go. They will inform you about the land you are on and explore places that you may not have considered before.
- Learn about Byron Bay's history and culture in this tour, from $69pp
- If you're seeking some adrenaline and wanting to be on your toes all day, these are the tours for you
- Wanting to see all the wildlife possible? This tour may be for you then, as you explore the rainforest, grassland and a eucalypt forest to find some of Australia's unique animals.
Water Activities
If surfing is not your scene but you're still a water baby, try these activities instead!
- Paddle down the Brunswick River, from $99 for 2hrs exploring
- Kayak with dolphins (and whales if you're lucky!), from $89 for 2.5hrs
Sky Dive
For all you adrenaline junkies wanting to do something unforgettable, a sky dive may be the way to go. With views of the lighthouse and Byron's beaches, it is a really unique memory to have.
