My favourite coffee shops in Salzburg
My favourite coffee shops in Salzburg
Adventure in Progress
I consider Salzburg the most beautiful city in Austria, not only because I live there, but also because of the wonderful combination of architecture and nature. However, it is definitely known for not having the best weather, as rainy and dark days are frequent. But in such cases, there are many cosy cafes where you can have a hot coffee and a delicious cake, either with friends or while studying/working on your laptop. Let me show you my favourites!

Coffee House Salzburg
@adventureinprogress
it is an excellent café with ample space that can accommodate many guests, making it ideal for those looking for a quiet place to study while sampling some of their delicacies (the choice is quite wide, from simple cakes to rich brunch menus). The interior design is remarkable, modern and elegant.

My Mom's
@adventureinprogress
Unlike Coffee House, space here is limited, making it more suitable for a shorter break or for take-away when the place is full. It is still worth a visit for the wide variety of cakes prepared, from traditional to more unusual ones, with many vegan options. The floriental pink décor makes it very cosy and aesthetic.

Coolinarik Café Salzburg
@adventureinprogress
Again, the space available is not the largest, so reservations are recommended, but the atmosphere is relaxed and charming, you'll feel like being in the Carribbean! It is a good option for those looking for something different, as sweet dumplings for all tastes are sold instead of traditional cakes. Brunch options and healthy bowls are also available.

Afro Cafe
@adventureinprogress
Intermediate in size with a colourful décor, it is a cosy café offering an intriguing combination of European and African delicacies. It does not offer a large variety of cakes, but is more of an a-la-carte venue, with breakfast and lunch menus. It is the place to be if you are looking for something different in the city.

Das Kaffeehaus by Hotel Melanie
@adventureinprogress
a new place in town, opened in March 2023 by the owners of Hotel Melanie, it is already a popular place among locals and tourists, despite being tucked away in a small street in the old town. The interior is very charming and homey, and the friendly staff will offer you many options for breakfast and homemade cakes.

Cafe am Kai
@adventureinprogress
My absolute favourite in Salzburg because of its location. It is indeed located directly on the Salzach river and has a terrace where you can enjoy the sun and the view of the entire city, but away from the crowded streets of the old town. It is the ideal place to try a traditional Austrian breakfast or to have a snack and a beer or an aperitif on late summer afternoons.

All of the places listed are located in or near the historic centre of Salzburg, have average prices and excellent service. I hope you enjoyed my guide and that it has inspired you for your trip to Salzburg!

I have been living in Austria for 3 years now and spent a semester abroad in Alicante, Spain. I love embarking on new adventures and traveling both solo and in groups; I am always looking for hidden gems and authentic experiences far from the crowds of hurried tourists. So far I've visited 22 countries, many of those more than once, and have acquired in-depth knowledge of many European regions.
