Koh Chang
@JacobScheel
In the shimmering waters of the Gulf of Thailand lies a hidden gem, so perfectly untouched that it seems almost too good to be true. This paradise, Koh Chang, is so spectacular that none other than the legendary explorer Sir Francis Drake once made it his personal mission to ensure the world looked the other way (or at least, that’s how we like to imagine it). But fear not! We’re here to lift the veil and reveal the truth behind this tropical wonder. And in return, all we ask for is a little discretion… perhaps a secret handshake or a knowing nod as you slip away to this untouched slice of heaven. Let’s dive in and uncover the magic of Koh Chang!

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Koh Chang is between November and February when the weather is pleasantly cool and dry. This is the peak tourist season, so expect more crowds and higher prices, but the stunning scenery and vibrant atmosphere are worth it.

How to Get to Koh Chang

Getting to Koh Chang is relatively straightforward. Many travellers start out in Bangkok, and from there it is a 5 hour ride by bus followed by 30 minutes on a ferry to reach the island. Ferries to Koh Chang run frequently, and the seas are generally calm, making for a comfortable journey. Alternatively, you can take a flight to Trat Airport from Bangkok, followed by a short taxi ride to the ferry terminal.

Booking transport from Bangkok to Koh Chang is very easy and we recommend using either:

How to Get Around on Koh Chang

Once on the island, the best way to get around is by renting a motorbike or using songthaews (shared taxis). Renting a motorbike is very easy and will put you down between 200-400 TBH/day depending on model and size. 125cc scooter will get you comfortably around the island - even if you're two on it! As always, exercise caution when riding motorbikes in Thailand. While Koh Chang boasts some of the best roads we've seen on islands, you'll still come across plenty of steep hills and potholes to test your shock absorbers. And remember to wear a helmet (Yes, Mom, we promise!),

Motorbikes allow you the freedom to explore the hidden gems of Koh Chang at your own pace, but if you prefer not to drive, songthaews are available. Simply wave one down (they pass through all towns regularly) and tell them where you're going!

Beaches

Koh Chang is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand. Here are a few that you shouldn’t miss:

A favorite among backpackers (but honestly, for everyone!), Lonely Beach is the ultimate chill spot, offering a laid-back vibe and sunsets so stunning they might just make you forget what time it is. It's the perfect blend of total relaxation - think Thai food right at the water's edge, soothing massages with Bob Marley serenading you, and cocktails in hand as you enjoy the fiery dance of the evening fire show. It's like paradise with a side of good vibes!

Activities

Adventure awaits at Koh Chang with plenty of activities to keep you entertained. Here are some highlights:

The Ghost Ship of Koh Chang

The Ghost Ship
@JacobScheel
Once destined to be the glittering gambling haven for tourists, the Galaxy Hotel now stands as a forgotten relic, waiting for you to marvel at its haunting charm. Thanks to a shift in laws and a hefty dose of financial misfortune, this once-promising hotspot was abandoned and has since earned a far spookier title: The Ghost Ship. Now, it’s a piece of history that feels more like a time capsule - frozen in place, yet drawing curious travelers in with its ghostly allure. Local legends and Thai folklore claim the hotel is haunted by the spirits of gamblers who, well, never quite made it back home. So, if you're into a little thrill while on holiday, come for the spooky vibes - and maybe say a prayer before you go inside!

Koh Ngam and Long Beach

Ko Ngam Beach
@JacobScheel
If you're after a beach that feels like your own private getaway, Ko Ngam is the place to be. Nestled within the Koh Chang National Park, this secluded gem is all about soft sand, clear waters, and that perfect sense of “I’ve found my secret paradise” (without the crowds). To get there, you’ve got two options: channel your inner adventurer and paddle over in a kayak (it's a short ride), or take the lazy route and catch a quick 5-minute boat ride. Either way, you’ll be rewarded with a peaceful beach where you can swim, sunbathe, or just enjoy the island's natural beauty. And just a heads-up: the fish here aren’t shy. They’ll happily join you for a swim without any invitation - so if you're lucky, you might just find yourself being "photobombed" by a curious little fish. They’re all about that beach life too!

The Nearby Islands

While it might feel like a crime to leave the (almost) perfect paradise of Koh Chang, its neighboring islands are ready to give it some friendly competition. Koh Kood, Koh Mak, and Koh Wai each bring their own unique flavor of paradise to the table.

For those on a tight schedule, Koh Wai is ideal for a quick escape. Imagine this: an early hotel pickup, a breezy boat ride, and a few magical hours on Koh Wai’s picture-perfect beach before heading back to Koh Chang in time to toast the sunset.

But if your schedule allows, here’s the winning combo: spend 2 days soaking up Koh Mak’s chilled vibes, then head over to Koh Kood for 3-5 days of pure bliss. Koh Kood is like that introverted friend who’s quietly amazing - peaceful, cozy, and so blissfully untouched you’ll wonder if you accidentally stumbled into a Robinson Crusoe dream.

Transportation from Koh Chang is easy and cheap, so just use either 12go.asia or Koh Journey - they'll make sure you get picked up form your hotel and catch the boat from Bang Bao Pier!

Conclusion

Koh Chang is a hidden gem in Thailand's crown, offering the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. From pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife to activities that range from "chill" to "full-on adrenaline," it’s easy to see why travelers can’t get enough of this island. So, pack your bags and get ready to explore Koh Chang - paradise is calling!
