One day to fall in love with Prague

There are so many must-see places in Prague, for which you would need at least three days. But if you have only a day, this is your Prague love-at-first-sight guide that will walk you through the most notable Prague sights and picture-perfect spots with a few local favorites. 

If all on foot, the whole itinerary is around 11 km.  But if you want to cut short a few kilometres, there are tips for public transport shortcuts.

Start your tour from Mustek M stending at the bottom end of the huge Wencislas that spread for over 700m.

There is a small square hidden behind the church with a few cafes and restaurants that offer outdoor seating throughout most of the year. If you want to have a coffee away from the crowds of tourists, this is your spot. 

Start strolling along Prazska Street, and you will soon find yourself in the heart of the Jewish Quarter. While there is plenty of history and culture to explore here, try to resist doing so, if you are aiming to see the rest of Prague sights in just a day. 

If you are seeing The Prague Astronomical Clock in front of you, from here you are in the heart of the "Old Town".  Fondly known as the "Pražský orloj," the Astronomical clock is a masterpiece of medieval engineering that has enchanted generations with its intricate design and hourly performance.

The Entrance is free, so feel free to have look at this splendid display of Gothic architecture, characterized by rib-vaulted ceilings and an ambulatory design. 

If you are up for trying some sweet local delights head over to Trdelnik & Coffee for sum heavenly treat. 

Enjoy the walk along the charming street known for its beautiful facades, designer shops, and high-end cafes. Make sure to keep an eye on the small connected streets as they are packed with more affordable hidden gems. 

Before you cross over and head to Prague Castle, head over to one of Prague's most beautiful squares opposite to the marvelous riverside promenade. 

The Jan Palach Square pays tribute to Jan Palach, a young student who self-immolated in 1969 as a protest against the Soviet invasion. The square is centered around the dramatic National Museum building on one side, and the stunning Rudolfinum on the other. 

On the other side of the street, a relaxing riverside promenade offers panoramic views of Prague's iconic landmarks. Take a second before you continue, as you prepare for more steps to explore the next sight. Have a look behind you to see modern Jan Palach Memorial. 

Pass the Manes bridge in front and head towards the Old Castle stairs.  to start walking across Prague Castle. While most people will be exiting from this side, trust me, there is a reason for this (backward) itinerary :). 

Alternatively, you can catch any of the trams stopping on the right side before the bridge (Staromestska) and get off the next one, if you want to rest your legs for a bit.    

You can enter the castle area free of charge and access the first section of the St. Vitus Cathedral. But to be able to enter buildings, the exhibitions and the Golden Lane (which I strongly recommend) you should purchase the 10eur ticket on your entry. 

Make note that the Cathedral closes at 17:00 in Summer and 16:00 in Winter. Being the most spectacular site, if you are running out of time, head straight to it! 

This awe-inspiring architectural gem is the largest and most significant church in the Czech Republic. It houses the tombs of numerous Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors. Managed by the Czech government as part of the Prague Castle complex. 

If you exit the Cathedral you can head towards the other exit of the Castle towards the beautiful Hradcany Square. 

Hradcany Square is graced by significant edifices, including the Salm Palace and the Schwarzenberg Palace, both integral to the National Gallery. 

Across from them stands the resplendent Baroque Archbishop’s Palace, serving as the seat of the Archbishop of Prague. Adjacent to the Salm Palace, there is a bronze statue of Czechoslovakia's first president, Tomas Garrigue Masaryk. 

Head down through Nerudova Street and enjoy the view of the colourful facades, local crafts shops and small eateries. Stop briefly to admire, or if not to late, to enter, Prague's most beautiful Baroque Church, St. Nicholas.

After St. Nicholas church continue your stroll towards Charles Bridge. 

From the Watermill, you will now be just a few meters from Lennon's Wall, anther of Prague's famed sights. 

This is one of my gifts to you. It is easy to miss, but it an absolute must for the true romantic.  

To enjoy it the most, take the small street on the left right before the Charles bridge and go under it. You can cross the Certovka Canal and come across the small square. Once there, go towards the river for a beautiful look of the other side. Head back and walk across the square to discover Prague's Watermill with Gremlin. 

If you haven't had diner already, there are plenty of options  around to choose from. If you are not hungry, my next diner recommendation comes with a view.  

To take a tram go to Helichiva street. The tram station is right in front of one very famous, while seemingly very modest Church of Our Lady Victorious and The Infant Jesus of Prague to catch a tram for your next stop. 

If you don't mind walking and you are not chancing the hour, enjoy your walk through the Kampa Park and across the Legion Bridge. 

If you take any of the trams numbered 1, 2, 18, 22, 23, 25, 97 and ride two stops (5min), you will get to your next destination - National Theater/Narodni Divadlo. 

National Theater (if you choose the longer route)

From here, start your walk towards Charles Bridge. 

The National Theatre (Národní divadlo) in Prague is a stunning example of Neo-Renaissance architecture that holds a significant place in Czech cultural heritage. 

Half way to the bridge, if the weather, you will see a Beer Garden, just by the river. 

If you are even more lucky, there will be a beautiful life music performance, and than you will find out why this was the perfect tour :) 

This is my favorite part, at dawn, when the city lights turn on and the views of the  Prague Castle gets even more beautiful as it mirrors in the Vltava River. 

We Saved the Best for Last, on purpose! f you have to visit Charles Bridge only once, then it is best to do it in the evening. The crowds of tourists are calming down at this time, and the beautiful illumination enhances the bridge's architectural features and adds to its allure. 

If you have it in you, Prague's Old Town is a lively place at night with plenty of people on the streets, a relaxed vibe and bars that stay late open. 

If you want to end the day here the closest tram stations are eather Karlovy Lazne near klub Lavka, or  at Malostranske namesti, across the bridge. The nearest Metro station is Staromestka. 

A reconstruction of the of the square has started in 2020 aimed to expand the green and walking space at the square and limit cars, in line with the Europe wide trend for opening public spaces. The new look should be done by 2025. 

On top of the Wencislas square is the magnificent building on the National (Natural) Museum. Turn your back to it and head straight to the Astronomical Clock.

There are two options how to continue the tour. 

The shorter one is to walk back and to cross (and enjoy) the Charles Bridge and arrive at the other side of the river. There will be a spot that offers the most breathtaking view, especially at dawn, after the sun has set and the street lights are/have just lit. 

If you are too early or too late for that magic hour, there is the longer route that I would strongly recommend (esp May-October), which was the reason for this particular itinerary. 

And there are two options for that one two - walking or taking the tram. 

If you weren't that lucky with the terrace, the next place - the terrace of Klub Lavka, just before the bridge, also offers drinks, food, and amazing views. 

The magical atmosphere is further enhanced by the stunning views of Prague Castle, Mala Strana, and the Vltava River, so make sure you are fully present here to enjoy the moment. 

Whether you feel like going to a bar, restaurant or just continuing your walk around, head towards the Old Town Square by passing by the Klementinum on your left. 

Walk across Old Town Square and continue to Dlouha Street to pick your spot.  The area is full of bars and restaurants offering a great atmosphere and a variety of world cuisines to choose. Bellow are just a few recommendations you can choose from.
