In February - Firefall happens! 🔥

Here's everything to know about it.

Firefall in Yosemite is one of nature’s most awe-inspiring events. Horsetail Fall lights up at sunset for a few days in February, creating a glowing cascade that looks like flowing fire. Here’s your guide to experiencing this magical phenomenon:

📍 WHEN TO SEE THE FIREFALL:

Mid to Late February – The Firefall only happens when the skies are clear, there’s enough water flow, and the sun hits the fall just right. You must have reservations to enter the park on weekends and holidays.

Timing: Get to the viewing area by 3:00 PM to secure a spot. The glow typically peaks around 5:00–5:30 PM.

📍 WHERE TO VIEW IT:

• Yosemite Falls Parking Area - and head toward Cooks Meadow (where I saw it!) - You'll see people post up off the side of the road. I just picked a spot where I feel like I could see it the best.

• El Capitan Picnic Area

💡 PRO TIP: The Firefall lasts only 10-15 minutes, so don’t be late! Bring a tripod and a wide-angle lens to capture the glow.

📍 WHAT TO EXPECT:

Crowds: This event draws photographers and visitors from all over, so be prepared to share the view.

Weather: It’s cold in February, so bundle up in layers and wear waterproof shoes—snow and rain can be part of the experience.

📸 PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS:

For the best shot, use a low ISO (100-200) to keep the image clean, and experiment with slow shutter speeds to capture the movement of the water and the fiery glow.

Ma I’m Fine ~ A podcast dedicated to inspiring adventure, empowering women, and protecting the earth! . Hi! I'm Alexis, but you can call me Lex! I am a California native who loves wildly epic adventures. Welcome to Ma I'm Fine's Thatch Shop! Here, you can save or buy all my travel guides. . Ma I’m Fine came to life after moving back home from Australia, thinking the knowledge and experience I gained would help others wanting to travel and become an au pair. I also wanted to remember my adventures and never lose the intimate details of my trips. There’s nothing like being able to relive your most cherished memories. As I’m no longer an au pair and currently work for a criminal defense attorney and non-profit, you can find me either on a road trip with my rooftop tent or living that backpacker hostel life. . I have always loved the outdoors and truly fell in love with our planet after getting certified in Scuba Diving. My passion for helping Mother Earth intensified after watching the Netflix documentaries Seaspircy, Our Universe, and Life On Our Planet. I believe change comes from knowledge and emotion; these documentaries changed my perspective. I want to use MIF to educate, bring awareness, and create change in order to leave Mother Earth a better place. I donate a portion of my profits to different non-profits depending on their location.
