The Çanakkale Local Food Guide
Nana Simit
Breakfast is everything to us. Turkey has a full-on traditional breakfast (you've probably heard about it or maybe already had it), but we obviously do not have that everyday!
So, we have bakery products and pastry: simit (Turkish sesame bread), poğaça (savory rolls), börek (another type of rolls that may be filled mostly with cheese). The one that I'll recommend here is simit. Resembling a circular bread with a golden crust and sesame seed coating, simit is a staple of Turkish cuisine and a ubiquitous snack found in the hands of locals and visitors alike.
This place has a good variety of simits: traditional ones (plain ones), those filled with Ezine cheese (a must-try Çanakkale cheese that has awarded the protected designation of origin (PDO) by the European Union), cheddar, tulum cheese (a traditional Turkish goat's milk cheese) and nutella. They have several places around the town; so, if you are visiting the one in the city center, near the sea side, it is a take-away spot and there are no tables at all. Buy your simits (I'll recommend those filled with ezine and tulum cheese) and just cross the street and sit at Golf Tea Garden. Order a Turkish tea and enjoy your breakfast and view near the Dardanelles!
