Before we jump into the full 5-7 day itinerary, let's first start at your home base. While we'll touch on a few additional locations to stay throughout your time (specifically for a less light-polluted view of the Northern Lights in winter), the majority of your nights in Iceland would be better off spent in the capital of Reykjavik itself.
Not only does this beautiful city boast extremely clean and European-style squares with cafes & shops, but it is one of the safest places to stay in all of Europe (according to us at least). Easy street parking (both free & paid) for those that want to rent a car, and plenty of bus tours that scoop you from local bus stops in the city, there truly isn't a better place to stay.
Neighborhoods
Now the next step is deciding where in the city to stay and what type of stay suits you best:
Centre City is where we definitely recommend to stay in Reykjavik if possible, as it is closest to every part of the city where you will want to be. From sight seeing to restaurants to bus stops for your day tours, this is the perfect area to get everywhere you need, even if you plan on walking around and not renting a car. The other 2 areas we are going to suggest below actually sandwich Centre on either side, which is why this area is the best for getting everywhere you'll want to go in the small city of Reykjavik.
