So grab your sense of adventure and let's dive into this playful and informative itinerary!

Day 1: Arrive/La Fortuna

Costa Rica may be small in size, but it packs a punch in terms of diversity. After landing in either San Jose or Liberia, it's time to hit the road and make your way to La Fortuna. Remember, it's best to do this drive during daylight hours to avoid any unexpected surprises. The roads may have a few potholes, and you'll encounter some gravel stretches depending on your chosen airport. If you arrive later in the day, consider staying overnight nearby and kicking off your adventure in the morning.

La Fortuna
@adventuresofapilotswife
La Fortuna is a small city with one main street and a few side streets. Getting around on foot was easy, the main town was flat and restaurants were centrally located. There’s a park right in the center of town that offers great views of the volcano on a clear day. We rented a car but never used it while we were in town since our hotel was in town. Everything off the main road is less maintained. You might be walking on a shoulder or gravel back to your hotel. That being said, we walked home in the dark after dinner every night and always felt safe.

Day 2: La Fortuna

Today, you'll have the entire day to explore the awe-inspiring Arenal Volcano area. A visit to the Arenal Lodge and Observatory is a must, as it offers breathtaking views of the volcano, beautiful hanging bridges, and even a stunning waterfall. For an unforgettable stay near the volcano, check out the dreamy Lost Iguana Resort. And don't forget to visit the La Fortuna Waterfall, just a stone's throw away from town. It's an easy hike, and you'll be rewarded with a refreshing dip. If you prefer guided tours, Viator has plenty of options to choose from.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Samantha Lorenz
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain Most Americans only get a few weeks a year to take a vacation. I specialize in trips and itineraries that get the most out of a destination in 7-12 days. I often pack my travel itineraries to the max and as a result I spend a ton of time researching everything I want to see. The only thing I love more than hearing “fasten your seatbelts” is finding all the amazing things there are to see and do in a destination. I make it a point to find the hidden gems among the well known attractions and avoid tourist traps. It gives you a more authentic look into a country’s culture and cheaper, less crowded options! I’ve been a pilot’s wife for many years and an avid traveler my entire life. So far I've had the privilege to explore: Australia New Zealand Japan China French Polynesia Canada Mexico Cuba Bahamas Costa Rica England Scotland Italy Greece Germany Netherlands Norway I look forward to sharing my knowledge and helping you plan the vacation of your dreams!
