A brief history:

Polignano a Mare, located in Puglia, Italy, has a rich history dating back to ancient times.

Originally settled in prehistoric times, it became a significant Greek and later Roman port known as Neapolis. The Via Traiana, a Roman road, connected it to other major cities, boosting trade.

During the medieval period, Polignano a Mare was fortified to protect against invasions and was influenced by various rulers, including the Byzantines and Normans.

In the Renaissance, it thrived under the Kingdom of Naples.

Local foods to try:

🍝 Orecchiette alle Cime di Rapa: A traditional Apulian pasta dish made with orecchiette ("little ears" pasta) and cime di rapa (broccoli rabe).

🐙 Polpo alla Pignata: Octopus slow-cooked in a clay pot with tomatoes, potatoes, and onions.

🐟 Frittura di Pesce: A mixed seafood platter typically featuring lightly fried calamari, shrimp, and small fish.

🍕Panzerotti: Deep-fried dough pockets stuffed with tomato, mozzarella, and sometimes other ingredients like ham or onions.

🍞Focaccia Barese: A local variation of focaccia bread, often topped with cherry tomatoes, olives, and oregano.

🍦Gelato: Polignano a Mare is famous for its artisanal gelato, with several renowned gelaterias offering a variety of unique and classic flavors.

We went to this lovely traditional bar every morning! It’s the perfect place to people watch. Make sure to order the Cafe Speciale — it’s their original coffee creation with lemon and soooo good. The cornettos, granita, gelato, and juices are also delicious.
