Caribbean Cruise Shore Excursions

Caribbean Cruise Shore Excursions

We love cruises, but the shore excursions through the cruise line can be so expensive and often make you feel like cattle being herded into trailers. We prefer a slightly more personalized option, and many of the same trips can be organized on your own. If you have a smaller party finding your cruise roll call by searching for Facebook groups with your sailing dates is a great way to organize a small tour to bring costs per person down. We love cruising for family vacations. It’s a great way for the whole family to have fun and feel relaxed (hey Kids Club!). It’s also great for larger groups or multi-generational trips. Everyone can do their own thing and connect where they want. We like to do dinner together and port excursions mostly together, and then once back onboard we kind of do our own things. If you have a grandparent or co-traveler going with you connected staterooms is a great way to go. This gives you a little more space and the ability to coordinate and hang out within the same space, especially after kids go to bed. Individual doors can still be closed as needed, but you’ll need your key to reopen or go through a balcony.

Castillo San Cristóbal

This is a fairly easy (albeit uphill) walk from the cruise piers. A great place for a sunset view.

Caribe Hilton

Self proclaimed creators of the Pina Colada. While I’m not sure about the attribution, they do make an incredibly fresh pina colada and have a beautiful lobby in which to enjoy it.

Magens Bay Beach
@objectsinmotion
This is a beautiful idylic beach with plenty of chairs for rent and restaurants for food and cocktails, including servers that come to your chairs. The water here is perfectly calm and wonderfully warm, yet refreshing enough from the summer humidity. Lots of interesting wildlife for snorkeling and an public outdoor shower and bathroom.

For the aviation nerds, this is the iconic beach where large planes fly over as they land at Princess Juliana International Airport.

The Baths National Park
@objectsinmotion
This is a boat ride and a trolley ride from Tortola, but worth the trip. The Baths are an incredibly picturesque view, cool and shaded by the rocks they are carved into by the ocean. You WILL get wet if you take the trail through the baths and a couple of the rocks and ladders can be slippery. There is a separate path down to the beach where cash only vendors sell shirts and fresh drinks served in coconuts. A few wild chickens roam picking at the fallen coconut shells also. The beach here is great for wading or snorkeling. There are public showers and bathrooms here, but I recommend eating at the restaurant back at the trail head and enjoying the pool.

Fish Fry Street
@objectsinmotion
You will be spoiled for choice for local food at this local food market. It is well worth a visit for some fried seafood and a drink.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I am a Southern California native, mother of two, military spouse and travel lover currently located in Naples, Italy. I’ve lived and visited many different places and I hope that my travels will help you plan your next great adventure! My guides focus on travel that the whole family can enjoy and feature some of the great places the military has sent us, as well as our own travels. Having lived in many different places, I have local knowledge of a wide variety of places. Two of my favorite recent travels are a month long family trip to Australia and Singapore and a multi-generational Caribbean cruise. I love that some of my kids first core memories will be of our international travels. It is so heart warming to watch them make friends at a foreign playground and having an interaction with a person that doesn’t speak their same language. Now, living in Italy we have many more opportunities for travel, both throughout Europe and locally near Naples, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast. We have enjoyed discovering new foods, exploring language and culture. My youngest has an egg allergy that we manage so food and language intertwine often.
