6 Day Belize Cayes Itinerary (San Pedro & Caye Caulker)  

Belize is a destination that receives year round visitors, but some months may be better than others. When you decide to visit can largely impact prices of flights and hotels depending on if you’re traveling in the high or low seasons. 

Belize is a diverse destination in Central America full of tropical jungle, white sandy beaches, and crystal clear Caribbean waters. 

In this guide we will cover how to spend 6 days in 2 of Belize’s most popular Cayes: Ambergris Caye & Caye Caulker. 

Both of these islands are very different which is why we recommend trying to do both on one trip. 3 days on each island is just enough time to get a good feel for what each one has to offer. 

Ambergris Caye is home to the town of San Pedro. This is considered the party island. Much more fast paced with a better nightlife scene. 

Caye Caulker is smaller and much more laidback. The motto of the island is “Go Slow” and the locals will constantly remind you to slow down and enjoy the island. This island truly embodies what it means to be on island time!

December through April is considered high season in Belize. This is where you’ll see the most amount of tourist & the highest prices. This is also the dry season when you can expect sunny days with little to no rain.

The shoulder season in the Belize is the transition from the dry to wet seasons. During this time, you’ll find less crowds & cheaper prices. If you’re okay with a little rain, this is a great time to visit the country!

August through November is the low season in Belize as it falls during the Caribbeans hurricane season. Because of this, you’ll find the least amount of crowds and cheapest prices but also the worst months for weather. 

On your first day in Belize, you will fly into BZE, the international airport in Belize City. Once you have arrived in Belize City, there are 2 options to get to San Pedro. 

Once you have your golf cart, you can head to check in to your accommodation. San Pedro has many options for accommodations ranging from resorts, boutique hotels, hostels, and vacation rentals. 

The first option is to take a small flight on either Tropic Air or Maya Island Air. These flights usually range around $85-$100 per person for a one way ticket. Make sure you book this one way, as you will be arriving and departing from different airports. The flight is quick and only 15 minutes. We recommend this option to get to your destination quickly. 

There’s an endless amount of golf cart companies to rent from in San Pedro. We recommend exploring the options online to see which fits best with your budget & specific needs.

The second option is to take a shuttle or taxi from the airport to the ferry terminal where you will then take a water taxi to the island. This option is much more affordable but will take more of your time.

We recommend booking the San Pedro express which is around $31 per person for a one way ticket and the boat ride is 1.5 hours. You will want to make sure you book this one way as well. They can also set you up with their airport shuttle for around $25. 

After you have arrive in San Pedro, you will need to make your way to your hotel. The best option here is to rent a golf cart to get around the island for your time in San Pedro. The golf cart company you book through will typically pick you up from the dock or the airport in San Pedro.

Since the island is easily accessible by golf cart, deciding where to stay is really based on personal preference. We will list a few options for each budget type. 

Resort: Mahogany Bay by Hilton and Alaia by Marriott are two popular resort options on Ambergris Caye. Alaia is the first and only all inclusive resort in Belize!

We stayed at Sandbar hostel for 3 nights on our stop in San Pedro and absolutely loved it and the location is great. We booked a private room with a balcony for around $50/night. They also have beds in dorm rooms available starting around $15/night 

Lastly, vacation rentals such as an Airbnb or Vrbo are great options for families are larger groups. This can also be a more affordable than the resorts. 

Sandbar Hostel is a great option for budget travelers and backpackers. Also a great option for anyone that's traveling solo as it has a very social environment. 

Ambergris Caye Vacation Rentals

After checking into your accommodation, we recommend exploring the island on your golf cart before dark to get a good feel of your surroundings. 

If you want to get out for dinner, we recommend stopping by the bar and grill at Sandbar Hostel to take advantage of their happy hour and weekly specials. They have great deals every night of the week like Taco Tuesday and is a popular spot on the island.

Today you're going to kick start your Belize trip with a bucket list activity and the one thing you absolutely can't miss when traveling to Belize: Flying over the Great Blue Hole!

The Great Blue Hole is a giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize and is a popular spot for divers but we think it is especially impressive when seen by air. This was by far our favorite thing we did during our time in Belize. 

We recommend booking the tour through Maya Island Air. They have flights leaving at 9 am every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, & Friday. This flight cost $215 USD per person and is 100% worth every penny!

After your tour to the Blue Hole has ended, head over to Palapa Bar & Grill to spend the rest of the afternoon. 

Palapa Bar and Grill is an open air restaurant that's over the water with a swimming area with floats & even a dock for tanning. This was one of our favorite places to have some food & drinks while hanging out in the sun for the afternoon. 

After a day in the sun, head over to Sunset Lounge to watch the sunset, have some drinks, and listen to music for the rest of the night. 

This is your last full day in San Pedro and there are three things you have to do before heading onto your next destination. 

First is the Iguana Eco Sanctuary which will be your first stop of the day when they open at 9 am. We recommend going when they open to avoid the heat and other travelers that may visit throughout the day. We went right when they opened and were the only people there!

The sanctuary is home to hundreds of iguanas. The iguanas are very friendly and love to be fed bananas. It is free to enter the sanctuary but please leave a donation before you leave to help support the conservation efforts of the sanctuary. 

They also sells authentic Belizean food as a way to support the sanctuary. 

Once you're done at the sanctuary, head over to Secret Beach for your last beach day on Ambergris Caye. 

Secret Beach is about 30 minutes by golf cart outside of San Pedro town. Once you get there there's several bars and restaurants to choose from where you can grab some lounge chairs or a table to hang out for the day. There's even an inflatable waterpark at Secret Beach Water Park Bar and Grill. 

Although Secret Beach isn't much of a secret anymore, it's definitely worth a visit during your time in Ambergris Caye. It has the whitest sand and bluest water out of anywhere else we visited in Ambergris Caye & Caye Caulker. 

Some other popular options are Pirate's Not So Secret Beach Bar and the very popular Blue Bayou where you are served at tables in the water!

Once you're done with breakfast, head over to the water taxi dock to start your journey to Caye Caulker. 

After another long day in the sun, spend your last night in San Pedro at the Truck Stop. The Truck Stop is an outdoor food truck park made out of shipping containers. 

They have several different food truck options, live music, games, a bar, swimming pool with a movie screen, and even a dock to watch the sunset! We personally loved the "Slice of Heaven" pizza food truck but there are other options such as Latin American & Southeast Asian Fusion. There is also an ice cream truck option for dessert. 

It's your last morning in San Pedro and almost time to make your way over to Caye Caulker. 

But, you can't leave San Pedro without stopping by Caroline's Cookin' for the best breakfast on the island.

Caroline's Cookin' was recommended to us by a friend and one of our favorite meals that we had in Belize! We had the banana pancakes, French toast, and fresh watermelon and pineapple juice! 

The restaurant is right next to the water taxi dock so we recommend stopping by on your way out! 

Book your tickets online through the San Pedro Belize Express before arriving at the dock. The boat ride is only 30 minutes and cost around $20 USD per person.

Caye Caulker is divided between the north and south side islands. The south side is where you will find Caye Caulker Village which has all the shops, restaurants, and activities. 

If you're looking to stay on the south side of the island, we highly recommend The Bohemian, a luxury villa vacation rental that can be booked through Airbnb. 

The north side of Caye Caulker is just now starting to be developed making it much more private and secluded. 

If you're looking for a resort, we recommend booking with Blu Zen, a luxury resort located on the north side of Caye Caulker & the only resort located on this side of the island. 

The resort also has a free boat shuttle that runs between the resort and the village several times a day so you can easily explore the island. 

The property includes 4 luxury villas each with a private dock, an infinity pool, and private beach. The villas can be individually rented or rented as a whole for a large group.

Lastly, if you're looking for a more budget stay, Bella's Backpackers is a popular hostel in Caye Caulker. It ranges from about $20-$90 USD per night based on what you book.
