Boricua! 5 Days In Puerto Rico
This journey through Puerto Rico will cover the spectrum of activities and then some - from history and culture, to outdoor adventures, with some down time in between, you'll travel across the northeast part of Puerto Rico for a week long trip full of spirit and flavor. I recommend renting a car for this trip, to travel to lots of different areas across the island.
Day 1
Begin your trip by visiting the only official rainforest within the US National Parks system. Here you can hike through the jungle and play in the cascading waterfalls. Visit Carabali Rainforest Adventure Park to ride ATV's or horses through the stunning flora and fauna of this unique ecosystem or check out Rainforest Zipline Park to zip over 2,300 feet across 8 lines over the canopy level of the trees.
After your day of play, head out on the water to experience the rare phenomenon of bioluminescence on a Bio Bay Kayaking tour. Microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates grow in quantities large enough to produce a "glow-in-the-dark" effect called bioluminescence; when you paddle or splash the water, the organisms shine in a neon blue-green color, making the water look as if it was lit by billions of glowing stars. There are only five ecosystems in the world where the concentration of these dinoflagellates is high enough to be considered a bioluminescent bay, and Puerto Rico is home to three of them! For the best experience, try to go when there is no moon, as excess moonlight will dull the shine.
Day 2
For day 2, pack up to head out for another full day adventure. Take a catamaran out to Culebra, an island that regularly appears on lists of the best beaches in the world. At Flamenco beach you can see rusted, graffiti-covered military tanks abandoned along the shoreline. Head over to the Taramindo or Carlos Rosario beaches for some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in Puerto Rico.
