WARUNG - local eateries

I had to start this foodie map with the best warungs on the island.

''Warung'' is an Indonesian word that literally means restaurant. They are the soul of culinary heritage, often managed by families, with recipes that have been passed down through generations. They are scattered all around, but here is the top list - enjoy!

Toko Buibu

Managed by the wonderful Estelle, this authentic warung is undoubtedly a hidden gem. Located away from the city center, this lunch spot offers an authentic Indonesian food. Estelle and her team decide each morning's what they will serve based on the market and season. Make sure to arrive early because they are often sold out by 3 pm. Warung Jawa Bu Sri
@loganfaure
What can we say about Madame Sri? Well, she's always sporting a warm smile, in a perpetual good mood, and, most importantly, she consistently serves up top-notch quality food. For just 50K IDR (3.5$), you can savor authentic Balinese cuisine made with the freshest locally-sourced ingredients. Personally, I usually let Madame Sri make the choices for me because I know everything she serves is absolutely delicious! Special mentions go to the fried tempe, the sambal, and the coconut green beans.

Kedai Binggo
@loganfaure
If you were to ask any Indonesian about their favorite dish, 99% of them would answer "Babi Guling" (Roast Pig). There are two institutions in the regions of Badung and Tabanan, and one of them is Kedai Binggo, a charming outdoor restaurant located in a family house garden. There are two main outdoor dining areas, one near the kitchen and another further into the garden with a fantastic view of the fields (I recommend the area further in). You can choose to dine in typical bamboo huts or at regular tables. Here, the star of the show is, of course, the pork. While you're here, go for the full "paket binggo babi bakul" which includes ribs, rice, fried skin, peanut sautéed spinach, and a small broth. Heads up, it's going to be a heavy meal, but you can't leave Bali without trying this classic dish.

T&T Chindo's Cuisine
@loganfaure
A local chef and also a friend of mine recommended this small place that mixes Chinese and Indonesian cuisine. The team is young and cool, and the food is pretty solid. Not everything is good, though, so go for the bakmi Komplit or the Mie/Nasi Kari Ayam. If you feel adventurous and are looking for richer flavors, go for the Nasi Campur, and that's it – don't look for anything else. The same owner also opened a café next door with good-looking doughnuts and decent coffee in case you still have some room for something sweet.

Hi 👋, I'm Logan, a foodie by trade and passion. I explore the world by designing and curating experiences in restaurants and hotels 🗺️. After my hospitality studies in Switzerland, and for the past 15 years, I have helped to open more than 50 hotels and over 150 restaurants. In the process, I've had to explore many cities, indulging in a lot of eating and drinking for market study purposes, but also for pure pleasure, as the love for food runs in our family's blood, with chefs, winemakers, and bakers ❤️ Here are the golden rules that I've established before starting this guide : ✨ GOLDEN RULES OF F*RK AROUND ✨ 🐵 All recommendations are based on merit-only—no sponsorship—no paid reviews. 🙈 Taste comes 1st, Style 2nd—it is not a list of where to be seen during fashion week. 🙉 Focus on finding hidden gems in both city centers and off-road locations. 🙊 We are not here to damage businesses, only to give merit to those who do well. 🌎 With F*rk Around, Taste the World, Never Waste a Bite 😉
