Amsterdam embodies the term “open minded”. As a city they excel at easy travel, picturesque views and quick access to any number of wonderful museums. The architecture in Amsterdam pays homage back to the city’s 17th-century Golden Age and helps preserve a unique history.
As a place to travel, Amsterdam provides all of the experiences you could want and is easy to visit by air or by train. The canal systems, bicycle paths and narrow houses lend a special atmosphere to a large city that can also feel inviting like a small town.
Fun Fact: Did you know that bicycles outnumber people in Amsterdam?

I recommend visiting Amsterdam while in the Netherlands to feel the history of the city in contrast to its more modern cousin, Rotterdam.
5/5 ⭐️ - $$$ Upscale Option - Hotel Jakarta is like something out of a magazine. The hotel completely embraces a "green" concept and is absolutely stunning. If you are looking for a memorable and luxurious experience or perhaps treating yourself for the night, I highly recommend staying here.
4/5 ⭐️ - $$ the Unique Option - Botel is a completely unique stay experience. The hotel is situated right on the water at Amsterdam North and is a beautiful boat hotel.
4/5 ⭐️ - $ Best Hostel - Bunk is an upscale hostel at Amsterdam North. It is beautiful, clean and has a very nifty punk atmosphere. I would 100% consider bunking here on future stays.
3/5 ⭐️ - $$ the Arty Option - I stayed here and it was a very unique experience - my room was literally hidden in a library. But, I would not stay here again - I advise staying closer to the inner part of the city.

Activities
Amsterdam is so vibrant and full of wonderful things to do there would never be enough space to list them all. So, I’m just listing my favorite things from my time in Amsterdam or things I am bursting to try when I get back in town.
Museums
While most museum admissions are covered under the iAmsterdam Card, it is important that you MAKE RESERVATIONS IN ADVANCE. The museum district can be very busy and slots do sell out.
Contemporary & Modern Art - Moco is a fabulous blend of old, new & futuristic. See contemporary art upstairs and step into an immersive experience downstairs.
Van Gogh - This museum is a true staple of the city and definitely worth seeing.

There are many other museums in the city that are worth visiting, but sadly I can't list them all. Investigate other options like Anne Frank Huis or Sexmuseum.
5/5 ⭐️ - Greenspace - This may be my favorite urban park that I have ever visited. It is wonderful, the bike paths are incredible & it's not so large that you feel overwhelmed. Perfection.
Searching for Windmills? It's a bit farther away, but will deliver on that classic Dutch look.

Great Walks & Trip Pictures
There are many wonderful places to take pictures in this city, but these were three of my favorites. Getting to see the massive Delft Blue mural at Cuyperspassage and the Damrak Canal Houses was a highlight of my stay. All destinations are within walking distance of Centraal Station.
5/5 ⭐️ - Public Art - Don't miss! Cuyperspassage is a hidden gem right next to Amsterdam Centraal station. The tunnel is a bike & pedestrian passage under the station that is completely decked out in a Delft Blue mural of warships.
4/5 ⭐️ - Food Hall - don't miss Foodhallen while you are here! This is one of the coolest food halls I have ever visited & it was well worth the trip. Caution - you may have to hunt for a table.
Pizza - a highly recommended spot to grab a slice.

Stroopwafels
Grab a snack at Hans Egstorf. I'm convinced that you haven't truly been to Amsterdam until you have tried the Stroopwafels. They are wonderful thin waffles made with caramel or treacle.
Dutch Pancakes - another staple of the city! Swing by for the awesome atmosphere & delicious bites. Conveniently located at Leidseplein.

Amsterdam Noord
The Ferry runs directly behind Amsterdam Centraal and allows for easy access to Amsterdam North just across the IJ. Don't forget to visit, there are many hidden gems located just across the water.
The Airport is wonderfully streamlined & easy to navigate. I HIGHLY recommend taking the metro over taking a cab. The Metro is tied into the airport. Cabs are extremely expensive in Amsterdam.
There are many places you can go to rent bicycles in Amsterdam, but Amsterbike is a great option.

Do not forget to ALWAYS LOCK YOUR BIKE. There is almost no crime in Amsterdam other than bike theft. Never chance it, your bike will be gone.
GVB Cards
GVB cards will let you take any bus, tram or metro in the city for your designated period of time. It is not necessary to count trips or pay per ride, just get a GVB card and it will allow you to go! Where to purchase: Jump on a tram and buy one inside - I know it sounds odd, but literally get on a tram and you will find a person in a booth in the middle of the tram selling cards. Or buy one at a terminal near metro stations.
iAmsterdam Card
What’s Included:
- unlimited public transport & the ferry
- a free boat ride on the canals
- entrance to over 70 museums/top attractions
- a full day bike rental from any one of multiple suppliers
Where to purchase: Order one online or buy on at the iAmsterdam Card Store in Centraal station.
KEEP OFF THE RED BRICKS - the redder side of the sidewalk is for bicycles not for pedestrians.
People are incredibly nice but not openly friendly (talking to strangers is a bit looked down upon) but people are very helpful if you need assistance and ask nicely.
Also, people will look at you funny if you say “excuse me” if you accidentally run into them - it really caught me off guard.
Day Trips Worth Considering
If you find yourself with extra time in Amsterdam or looking to explore beyond the city check out these recommendations.
Active Option - Utrecht has rich history and wonderful places to explore. Consider heading down and exploring the area or getting active in their canals - SUP, kayaking & more.
