The Ultimate: Amsterdam City Guide

The Ultimate: Amsterdam City Guide

Nikki Raitz
Amsterdam embodies the term “open minded”. As a city they excel at easy travel, picturesque views and quick access to any number of wonderful museums. The architecture in Amsterdam pays homage back to the city’s 17th-century Golden Age and helps preserve a unique history. As a place to travel, Amsterdam provides all of the experiences you could want and is easy to visit by air or by train. The canal systems, bicycle paths and narrow houses lend a special atmosphere to a large city that can also feel inviting like a small town. Fun Fact: Did you know that bicycles outnumber people in Amsterdam? ___________________ Check out the "Transit & General Info" section at the bottom to see tips for getting around the city & exploring Amsterdam at an affordable price. See "Day Trips Worth Considering" if your trip leaves you with extra time for exploring beyond the city limits. ____________________ I recommend visiting Amsterdam while in the Netherlands to feel the history of the city in contrast to its more modern cousin, Rotterdam.

Transit & General Info

If you are flying in....

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
@nikkiraitz
The Airport is wonderfully streamlined & easy to navigate. I HIGHLY recommend taking the metro over taking a cab. The Metro is tied into the airport. Cabs are extremely expensive in Amsterdam.

Details

If you are taking a train....

Amsterdam Centraal railway station
@nikkiraitz
Centraal is conveniently located and hosts a few shops, restaurants & the docks for the ferry across the river.

Bike Rentals

AmsterBike
@nikkiraitz
There are many places you can go to rent bicycles in Amsterdam, but Amsterbike is a great option.
Add to
Details

Do not forget to ALWAYS LOCK YOUR BIKE. There is almost no crime in Amsterdam other than bike theft. Never chance it, your bike will be gone.

GVB Cards

GVB cards will let you take any bus, tram or metro in the city for your designated period of time. It is not necessary to count trips or pay per ride, just get a GVB card and it will allow you to go! Where to purchase: Jump on a tram and buy one inside - I know it sounds odd, but literally get on a tram and you will find a person in a booth in the middle of the tram selling cards. Or buy one at a terminal near metro stations.

iAmsterdam Card

What’s Included:

- unlimited public transport & the ferry

- a free boat ride on the canals

- entrance to over 70 museums/top attractions

- a full day bike rental from any one of multiple suppliers

Where to purchase: Order one online or buy on at the iAmsterdam Card Store in Centraal station.

Helpful Tips

Sidewalks

KEEP OFF THE RED BRICKS - the redder side of the sidewalk is for bicycles not for pedestrians.

People are incredibly nice but not openly friendly (talking to strangers is a bit looked down upon) but people are very helpful if you need assistance and ask nicely.

Also, people will look at you funny if you say “excuse me” if you accidentally run into them - it really caught me off guard.

Day Trips Worth Considering

If you find yourself with extra time in Amsterdam or looking to explore beyond the city check out these recommendations.

Utrecht
@nikkiraitz
Active Option - Utrecht has rich history and wonderful places to explore. Consider heading down and exploring the area or getting active in their canals - SUP, kayaking & more.

Naarden
@nikkiraitz
Historical Option - This old walled city is just around the corner from Amsterdam. Consider visiting and seeing all that Naarden has to offer.
