What To Do In Amish Country, Ohio (Art Galleries and Markets)
Given the nature of the Amish, a lot of things in this region (no matter Amish or "English" owned) lack a solid web presence. Word of mouth advertising is golden here but it makes it hard for travelers to find and enjoy the best it has to offer!
Although some places will take card, this is still a cash heavy area. You may wander into a small little shop that is cash only- so always have some on you just in case you fall in love!
Galleries
Scattered around this corner of Ohio is art galleries full to the brim with local and national artists. Art is almost always for sale and you will find everything from fine art, folk art, modern art, and easily giftable items.
Shops
Not quite a gallery. not quite a store, but still full of locally made goods and artisan crafts. These places are more retail but just as enjoyable to walk around and see something beautiful. Some places may even have a workshop scheduled, so check their pages before your trip!
Events
The best time to explore the art scene is with the craft fairs! Double check the organizations page for final dates but the following happen regularly every year.
Art on the Alley
Happening twice a year, this outdoor art fair takes over downtown New Philadelphia. Full of live dance and band performances, food trucks, and of course local art- you'll find every possible creation in this small town. This event usually takes place in May and October.
Music on the Square
Jam out in the summer time to local bands and artist during this summer concert series. While bands play through the night, unique art vendors and street performers are set up around the downtown plaza in New Philadelphia. Every year is different but you can often catch a show on a warm July night.
ZADA Modern Art Show
Something for you winter travelers! This fine art show happens every November in Dover, Ohio and showcases some of the biggest and most beautiful pieces Amish Country artists have to offer. It is also raises funds for local kids in the form of scholarships, so every sale results in money straight back into the community. Also held at a wonderful local winery, this is the one-stop place to sample art, wine, and cheese.
Old Route 39 Markets
Markets sprinkled throughout the year, Old Rt. 39 is right downtown in Sugarcreek, next to some great eateries. This art market doubles as a farmers market in the warmer seasons and skating rink in the colder, so prepare to buy fresh produce from the local farms and crafts from artisans, or enjoy a night out with the family.
Next time you find yourself heading through Northeast Ohio, don't forget your daily dose of art!
