Firenze

Sophie Minchilli
One of Italy’s most visited cities, it can be hard to navigate the endless food choices in this beautiful city, especially with all the tourist traps scattered throughout the historic center . From traditional family owned trattorie, to more glamorous restaurants doing something slightly different or even a simple panini shop, Firenze has it all.

Restaurants that might make you feel like you are stepping back in time

Trattoria Cammillo
@sophieminchilli
Just over the river in Florence ‘a Santo spirito neighborhood, this restaurant has been open and going strong since 1945. Their menu includes traditional dishes like Ribollita, but don’t miss the seasonal specials, like persimmon tiramisu in autumn and whatever ‘special of the day’ pasta dish is available.

Alla Vecchia Bettola

This trattoria lives up to its name (literally translates to ‘Old Tavern’), and serves traditional Florentine food in a somewhat kitschy Italian atmosphere. Some of our favorites include the fried rabbit, pappa al pomodoro, fried artichokes and chicken liver crostini. For a step back in the 80’s, don’t miss their penne alla vodka

Trattoria Da Ruggero
@sophieminchilli
Not quite located in the historic center, it’s worth the walk to get a taste of what a traditional Florentine trattoria looks like. The decor hasn’t changed much since the 70’s, and the menu also sticks to its historic traditions. Their most famous pasta is ‘spaghetti alla Carrettiera’: a tomato sauce with a bit of chilli, breadcrumbs and anchovies. When in season, their fried porcini are a must

Trattoria Sergio Gozzi
@sophieminchilli
This local institution is only open for lunch, so it’s a great option for a sit down meal after a long morning of exploration in the city. They serve extremely affordable classics like Pappardelle pasta and Peposo (peppery beef stew)

Trattoria Marione
@sophieminchilli
Always filled with locals enjoying their lunch break or dinner with friends, this is a good classic option in the center of Florence. Make sure to ask the waiter for the seasonal specials, and a reservation is extremely important in order to secure a table (especially on weekends or around Italians many holidays)

Buca dell'Orafo
@sophieminchilli
This small restaurant right off the Ponte Vecchio, used to be a wine cellar and then transformed into a beloved traditional restaurant. If you are able to ignore the somewhat ‘rustic’ service, you can enjoy dishes like braciole rifatte (breaded veal re-cooked in a delicious tomato sauce), artichoke frittata, and the most tender Florentine steak
