Our Ultimate Guide to Rome - Do, Eat, Drink
DO
Firstly, three very important pointers when planning your trip as we know how daunting it can be with where to start!
1. Don't try and see EVERYTHING in a weekend. There is an overwhelming number of amazing attractions to see and do in Rome, you could spend a week and still not scratch the surface. You will completely overwhelm yourself trying to see too much in too short a space of time and that is no fun at all. We recommend planning a maximum of two things to do in a day, then keeping a list of other sites you can do if you have the time and energy to explore some more.
2. Leave plenty of time to get to your next site, especially anything with a specific entry or start time! The city is large and sprawling with limited public transport links, so prepare for lots of walking and always allow extra time for traffic or public transport delays.
3. Be prepared for crowds. We visited Rome in March which is the 'off-season', but it didn't stop there being huge lines for the major sites. If you want to experience the likes of the Colosseum, Vatican Museums or St Peter's Basilica at their quietest we recommend visiting in the first slot of the day.
With all this in mind, let's break down the key categories of sites and attractions you will find in Rome.
Ancient Rome
Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture aficionado, or simply curious about the past, if you are visiting Rome, the chances are seeing an ancient monument or two will be top of your list.
