The Northern Catskills
Nally
It's time to get out of the city. New York City is always exciting, but it can be completely exhausting. You need to breathe fresh air and stretch your legs. You want to hike up a mountain, jump into a lake, search for waterfalls, sip seasonal IPAs, taste freshly picked veggies, and try to ski for the first time in, well, way too long. It's a good thing the Catskill Mountains are so close.
The Catskills are part of the Appalachian Mountains. They cover nearly 6,000 square miles in southeastern New York and sit about 100 miles northeast of New York City. On the eastern edge, the mountains rise steeply from the Hudson Valley along the Hudson River.
The area became a popular summer escape in the mid-20th century. All-season, outdoor activities--from fishing and hiking to cross-country skiing and snowboarding--are now the biggest draws. Old lodges and motels are being turned into boutique hotels. Plus, in the last few years, new bakeries, bike paths, bookstores, breweries, coffee shops, farm-to-table restaurants, ice cream shops, and record stores have been popping up on a seemingly weekly basis. The Catskills are cool again.
Since it's impossible to see everything in the Catskills during one trip, this guide focuses on the Northern Catskills, including the towns of Catskill, Hunter, Palenville, and Windham.
This detailed guide includes:
Places: hamlets, towns, villages
Stay: cabins, hotels, lodges
Eat: bagels, cafes, pizzerias, restaurants
Drink: breweries, cideries
Shop: farm stands, record stores
Do: forests, gardens, hikes, lakes, ledges, lookouts, mountains, rocks, trails, waterfalls
Transportation: parking lots
Note: I travel to the Catskills frequently, so this guide will be updated.

The Catskill Mountains are a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains. The mountain range covers nearly 6,000 square miles in southeastern New York. It sits about 100 miles northeast of New York City and 40 miles southwest of Albany. On the eastern edge, the mountains rise steeply from the Hudson Valley along the Hudson River. The southwestern edge gradually fades into the Allegheny Plateau. More than 30 peaks in the Catskills rise above 3,500 feet. Slide Mountain (4,180 feet) is the highest.

Athens
Athens
@nally
Athens is a small town (population less than 4,000 people) along the west bank of the Hudson River. It lies north of Catskill and across the water from the town of Hudson. Middle Ground Flats, a long island in the middle of the river, is part of Athens. So are two lakes: Hollister and Sleepy Hollow.
The historic town used to be a bustling port known for its brickmakers and shipbuilders. Its main road, Second Street, is lined with old buildings (Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian architecture). Inns, kayak launches, green parks, and restaurants' patios dot the waterfront. While the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, one of two remaining in the Hudson River, lies just offshore.

Black Horse Farms
@nally
You can't leave the Catskills without stopping a farm stand to stock up on fresh produce. Black Horse Farms, on the western edge of Athens, is a good stop if you're in the Northern Catskills. The market is in a remodeled barn from the 1860s. Homemade meals, sweet and savory pies, and quiches are made in the bakery. Locally made cheese, maple syrup, meat, soaps are available, too. While flowers, herbs, and vegetables are grown in the attached greenhouses. Hopefully, you brought more than one reusable bag.

Big destinations. Little details.
I travel—a lot. I’m always taking notes, organizing quick getaways, plotting big holidays, and dreaming. I’ve been to six continents (I’ll get to Antarctica eventually), nearly 40 countries, and too many cities and islands to count.
Tons of planning, way more than is actually necessary, goes into each adventure. Your trips can benefit from my little addiction.
No two people are exactly alike. No two vacations should be the same either. These guides are designed to help you follow your passions, satisfy your cravings, and spark new whims. Think of them as starting points as you create your own exciting itineraries.
