So you're planning a trip to Normandy? Excellent choice! There is a lot to see in this underrated, historical region of France!

This guide is just a teaser of some of the wonderful things you can see and experience in the region. I am focusing this guide just on the area around Bayeux and Caen, or how we like to call it - the William the Conquerer part of the region!

Quick history:

🏰 Normandy's history is iconic and is deeply linked with the life of William the Conquerer. Born in Falaise (not far from Caen), William the Bastard inherits his father's duchy and eventually inherits the throne of England.

⚔️ He officially claims his throne after the Battle of Hastings - the details of this story are displayed in the Bayeux Tapestry - and he is quickly known as William the Conquerer.

⛪️ Today, William is laid to rest in Caen. His life and history is sprinkled all across the region and there is so much discover.

🌊 More recently, Normandy is also known for its history as the grounds for many battles in WWII. The beaches of Normandy have many monuments and memorials commemorating the lives that were lost on their shores.

Where to stay:

When picking a place to base yourself for a visit to the western side of Normandy, I would recommend choosing Bayeux.

We opted for Caen, which is another nice city, but when we visited Bayeux, we knew we would have much rather preferred staying around there! It is much more charming and quaint compared to the bigger city of Caen.

Château La Chenevière
@czphoneshome
What better way to visit France than staying in a CASTLE! This property is absolutely beautiful, equipped with 2 restaurants, a pool, a gym, and gorgeous grounds. It is located just outside of Bayeux, closer to the D-Day beaches.

How to get around:

If you'd like to stay in the main towns such as Bayeux and Caen, both are accessible by train.

⏰From Paris, you can reach Bayeux by train in between 2-2.5 hours. Direct trains leave from Paris St. Lazare Station

💰Prices range depending on the time of year. As I am writing this, prices are around 50 euros one-way.

🎟️ You can book your trains using sites such as Trainline or Omio. Both compare travel options and show you the best prices.

🚗 However, if day trips are something you have in mind, then finding a guided tour or renting a car might be best.

Where to eat:

Le Petit Jardin
@czphoneshome
This restaurant is one of Chateau la Chenevière's locations and even if you aren't able to stay on-site, I highly recommend coming here for dinner. The prices were very reasonable and the food was incredible. They make everything using the seasonable products and vegetables they grow in their own gardens.

La Rapière
@czphoneshome
Although we didn't have time to dine here, this restaurant is one of the highest-rated in Bayeux! Another great choice to enjoy delicious local French food from the region!

Le Moulin de la Galette
@czphoneshome
The regional dish of Normandy is galette (buckwheat, savory crepes)! So when visiting the region, you need to dine in a creperie at least once! And if you want to be a true Norman, have your galette with a cider (another local delicacy!). The restaurant is located in a mill that has been around since the Middle Ages!!

What to do:

Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux
@czphoneshome
A visit to Bayeux is not complete without a visit to the Bayeux Tapestry. This is where you will fully appreciate the history of the region and I can tell you from experience, visiting here was incredible! The tapestry is huge and incredibly impressive! And the storytelling was so captivating, as someone who loves history I was really in my happy place! You can read more about what I liked about the Bayeux Tapestry in my blog post - linked at the end of this guide!

Day Trip Ideas:

Caen
@czphoneshome
Caen is one of the larger cities in the region! When you first arrive, I recommend stopping by the Tourist Office and asking for the free walking tour map. The walking tour will take you to the most beautiful spots in the city including: 🏰 Caen Castle ⛪️ Abbaye Aux Hommes 🛍️ The beautiful shopping streets

🚂 Caen is 15 minutes by train (costs around 8 euros) from Bayeux

@czphoneshome
Juno Beach is very significant to Canadian and British history as this is the beach where these soldiers mainly landed. Today there is a really cool museum and visitor centre located at the beach as well as some German Bunkers on the grounds. They also offer guided tours on site!

If you don't have a car:

🚌 I'd recommend taking a tour, since there are not many other ways to access the D-Day beaches without a car. Here are some to consider:

(👆🏻 Although I haven't gone on this particular sidecar tour, I have done a tour with the same company in Paris. The experience was really amazing - I really enjoyed our tour!)

Bucket List Moment:

Mont Saint-Michel
@czphoneshome
Mont St Michel is one of the most visited sites in France and one of the most iconic spots in Normandy! I highly recommend taking a day to visit, if you're in Bayeux, you really aren't that far away and it was definitely worth it for us! We went on a walking tour but most of our time there was walking around, grabbing lunch and exploring the mainland to appreciate the views from afar! I made a reel on tips about visiting Mont St. Michel 👇🏻
