Once a fishing settlement, Ersfjordbotn has now become a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The village’s breathtaking scenery, especially during the winter months when the Northern Lights illuminate the sky, makes it a photographer's paradise. Summer brings the Midnight Sun, ideal for hiking and exploring the surrounding landscapes. Popular hikes, such as the route to Mount Tønsåsen, offer sweeping fjord views. The area’s tranquil vibe also makes it a quiet alternative to the bustling city of Tromsø.


How to get there
Ersfjordbotn is just a short 30 minutes drive from Tromsø city centre.
🚍 By bus
Taking a bus from Tromsø to Ersfjordbotn is a convenient and budget-friendly option. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the stunning views along the way, without the stress of driving on snowy and icy roads. Bus Route 425, operated by Svipper, will take to Ersfjordbotn in roughly 30 minutes.

PRO TIP: Purchase your ticket via the Svipper app or at the bus terminal for ease (if you have cash on you, you can also buy your ticket in the bus but it may cost you more). Double-check the return schedule if you plan to spend a few hours in the village.
🚘 By car
If you're renting a car, the drive is just 20km (12 miles) from Tromsø city center, taking around 30-40 minutes. The scenic route offers plenty of opportunities for detours and photos, with winding roads that showcase Norway’s stunning landscapes. Renting a car typically costs NOK 600-1000 per day, depending on the model and company. If you're traveling with a group, a rental car may be a more cost-effective option than the bus.

Stop 1: Ersfjord Viewpoint
Start your day early in Ersfjordbotn with a visit to Ersfjord Viewpoint. From here, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Ersfjorden, framed by the Lyngen Alps and untouched wilderness. We highly recommend visiting during sunrise for the soft, golden light reflecting off the fjord's still waters—it’s perfect for photography!


Stop 2: Naustbuktvegen Street
Then, take a short 10-minute walk to Naustbuktvegen Street, where you can stroll past colourful Arctic homes. These traditional wooden houses, set against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks, offer a glimpse into local life and provide a serene spot to wander and take in the surroundings.


Stop 3: Vågholmen
Afterward, head to Vågholmen (another 10-minute walk) for some peaceful reflection by the water. This remote area offers a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for spotting wildlife or simply enjoying the calm beauty of the Arctic.


Stop 4: Frozen Arctic Waterfall
Continue on to the Frozen Arctic Waterfall (about 20 minutes on foot). During winter, the cascading water freezes into mesmerizing ice formations. It’s a must-see natural wonder, especially when the winter light creates a magical scene. The waterfall was the highlight of our trip to Ersfjordbotn—we couldn’t stop admiring how the ice shimmered against the rugged peaks.


Stop 5: Ersfjordvegen
Finish your day with a leisurely walk along Ersfjordvegen (5-10 minutes or longer if you feel like exploring). This scenic road offers breathtaking views of the fjord and surrounding mountains, making it the perfect way to wrap up your one-day Arctic adventure.

Stop 6: Bryggejentene AS Café
After exploring Ersfjordbotn, stop by the town's only café and restaurant: 📍 Bryggejentene AS Café. If you're visiting Ersfjordbotn in the winter and don’t have a car, Bryggejentene AS is the go-to place to enjoy a cozy atmosphere. It’s also the only café/restaurant/shop in town, but don't let that deter you—it’s absolutely worth the visit for the vibe and stunning views!
💡PRO TIP: If you're travelling Car-free and need to catch the bus back to Tromsø, there's a bus stop right in front of the café.

We visited to experience Ersfjordbotn from a higher vantage point, and it didn’t disappoint.
