Best places to eat & drink in Hobart

victoria Moura-Watts
Hobart is very well known for its great food and restaurant culture, but no one tells you where to go; I spent 6 weeks in Hobart trying as many places as I possibly could, and these are my top recommendations and some overrated places to avoid.

Breakfast/ Lunch

Sunbear

Simple, delicious, all made from scratch and as close to a farm to plate experience as you could get. They even were open during easter public holiday!

Berta

Consistantly the BEST coffee in all of Hobart. The food was also delicious and very well made but please if anything do yourself a favour and get yourself a coffee from this place.

Sisterhood Cafe

Best in ambience and comfort. Plenty of space and choice in variety of seating. Great location for working or studying and the food was also delicious and very well made with good variety of choice.

The Stagg

Best toasties in all of Hobart. This place may be small but don't hold back on the goodness! Stop here for a midday drink and toastie to warm your day up.

Bathurst St Bagels

Bagels though simple if done well can be mindblowingly good. This place definitely know what they're doing. In Australia we don't tend to eat a lot of Bagels so although my bar isn't set very hight in terms of Bagels it definitely is in terms of satisfying, delicious food so definitely give this a go!

Little Missy Patisserie

For a bakery, they opened quite late and although most of the food wouldn't be available until closer to lunch their vegetarian only menu and sweets are worth coming along to try. Very wholesome and rustic these guys care about taste more than anything.

Places that are overrated and I would not go back:

- Daci Daci bakers

- Salamanca Markets

 Fancy Dinners

Ogee

I had the set menu and it was so good, even though I was already so full I had to order an extra dessert. A true must when in Hobart.

TIP: they don't do many reservations so get in early and seat at the bar so you don't have to wait in line and you get to chat with the staff too!

The lounge

The lounge at frogmore creek is Frogmore Creeks winery restaurant based in Hobart so all those that can’t make it to the beautiful winery still don’t miss out on their exceptional food and very affordable menu! As far as fine dining/ casual fine dining went this was the most affordable of them all!

The food is made to be shared so bring some friends because you will definitely want to try as much as you can from the menu including dessert!

Aloft

Aloft is everything you want from a fine dining experience. Enough uniquenesss and complexity to make you awestruck and blown away like ratatouille eating cheese but not so much that you simply have no idea what you're eating. The customer service was also probably the best of all of the places we went to in Hobart which absolutely adds to the experice.

Casual Dinners

Hobart Brewing Co

Not only is this place an iconic brewery in Hobart, but they have a few food trucks parked at the back a few nights a week which with a fire, pool and little outdoor games you can also play make it the best casual chill out spot in all of Hobart with your friends.

Indian Culture

Hobart has a lot of Indian restaurants, and although with Indian food, its quite hard to get a bad one, this place in particular was great! With unique options that speak more to the geography of the country rather than simply our western tastebuds, this was a delight to not only eat but to discuss the food with the waiter as well.

Suzie Luck's

Although I didn't eat at this one personally, I had a friend who found it so good, she had to go there twice! Take it to the test yourself!

Drinks

A Moment of Tea

Not your regular bar, but one you MUST go to on your stroll through Salamanca.

With mocktails, Chinese teas to take home and delightful knowledgable and passionate owner, wether you want something to refresh your day or warm you up in the winter months, this little tucked away tea bar is a wonderful and unique Hobart experience.

Markets

Tasmania is a wonderful place to find great quality local produce. The best place I found to get access to produce that didn't feel over priced was at the Sunday Farm Gate Markets on  Bathurst Street.

From fresh cheese to sourdough crumpets, fruit and veg and even food truck food, this place is the place to be on a Sunday morning in Hobart.
