In the streets of Tokyo

Your flight most likely arrives to Narita Airport. 

From the airport you have three options to reach Tokyo:

Here you will be able to get a Sim Card and exchange some amount of money right after the baggage claim.

2. If you are staying in GINZA - YURAKUCHO:

Take the Keisei Skyliner to Keisei Ueno and change with the Ginza line for three stops (Yellow G) until Asakusa Station. 

Take the JR Narita Line to Tokyo Station and walk for 10 minutes.

Otherwise you can also take the "LCC" Bus from Narita to Tokyo Station by just exiting the airport building.

Note: For the subway it is needed to buy a "Suica" or "Pasmo" Card at the subway station.

Looking at the subway mup it will be a bit confusing, but reaching your hotel it's easier than shown, and sooner or later you will get used to this.

After following the above Case 2, take the Marunouchi Line (Red M) for 9 Stops until Shinjuku.

Whenever existing the train, please pay attention to the maps available at the tracks, as it will indicate which exit you should take.

My top three suggestions for sleeping in Tokyo are the areas of Shinjuku, Asakusa and Ginza-Yurakucho

An Introduction to the Most Famous Neighbourhoods

Shinjuku is the modern area of the city, hosting the busiest station in the world and the frenzy of Tokyo.

1. A unique experience you will experience nowhere else, Shinjuku during the day is the office city, while at night is the entertainment city.

2. Central area of the west of Tokyo, close to Shibuya, the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and to the "Hipster" area of Koenji.

3. Easy transportation to Mount Fuji and southern cities like Kyoto.

1. The area is very touristic, especially at night, and bars and restaurants are the same

2. Lots of prostitution and shady areas (although not dangerous nor harmful in anyway). Myself fell drunk asleep on the streets here while I was in university... and nothing happened to my wallet or belongings (Tokyo Life).

Asakusa is the remainings of the old city and represents the tradition of Tokyo.

1. Asakusa is very busy in the day, waking up early means visiting the area with less tourists

2. Food and drinks are a bit cheaper than west of tokyo

3. The east part of the city is closer, including Tokyo Skytree, the National Museum and the manga city of Akihabara 

1. The west of the city can be slightly far (30 to 40 min by subway)

2. There is not much nightlife in the area and subway closes before midnight

3. The transfer to Mt. Fuji or southern cities like Kyoto require one extra subway ride (waking up 1hr in advance)

I won't hide that Yurakucho is by far my favourite area. Is home of many local restaurants under the railroad that survived the bombing of Tokyo.

1. It is very central and close to Tokyo Station, Ginza, the Imperial Palace Akihabara, Kanda, Odaiba and the Tokyo Tower, also its not too far from Shinjuku and Shibuya.

2. The area has very few tourists and the restaurant experience is very much authentic. 

1. There is not much to visit in this specific area.

Here are my top recommendations to visit in Shinjuku:

Explore this expansive and beautifully landscaped garden, a harmonious blend of Japanese, English, and French garden styles. It's an ideal place for a leisurely stroll, picnics, or simply enjoying the seasonal beauty.

Visit the observation decks of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building for stunning panoramic views of the city. The best part? It's free! The building itself is a notable example of modern architecture.

Immerse yourself in the world of virtual reality at VR Zone Shinjuku. With a variety of VR experiences, from gaming to simulation, it's a unique and cutting-edge attraction.

Take a moment of tranquility at Hanazono Shrine, an oasis amidst the urban chaos of Kabukicho. The shrine, with its torii gates and traditional architecture, offers a peaceful retreat.

Stroll through Omoide Yokocho, also known as Memory Lane or Piss Alley, for a nostalgic glimpse of post-war Tokyo, where food is very much recommended.

Try your hand at a traditional Japanese pastime (baseball) by visiting the Shinjuku Batting Center.

If you are into Korean culture, visit Shin-Okubo, Tokyo's Koreatown, just one station away from Shinjuku. Explore Korean culture, enjoy authentic Korean cuisine, and shop for K-pop merchandise.

2. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

Koenji is the bohemian district of Tokyo, worthy of visiting if you are staying more than 5 days in the city or if you are very interested about rock music, underground culture and you want to go away from the touristic area of Tokyo. It is worthy of visiting if you are staying in Shinjuku.

If you are visiting in August, there is a huge festival here, the Koenji Awa Odori.

Here are my top recommendations to visit in Shibuya:

Shibuya Crossing is one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in the world. To get the best view you can go at Shibuya Hikarie in the Sky Lobby of the 11th floor.

Pay homage to the legendary loyal dog at the Hachiko Statue near Shibuya Station. It is a famous meeting point.
