Best Beaches Near Rome
Santa Marinella
Santa Marinella is one of the most popular beaches outside of Rome, for both tourists and locals. It is only a 30 minute train ride from Rome, getting off at the "S. Marinella" station. Using the Trenitalia app to book these train tickets is super easy, and it is an app I recommend for any travel around Italy (linked at the bottom of this page). The best part is that the beach is only a 5 minute walk once you get off the train. At this beach depending on the season, you may find paid chairs and umbrella sections, but if this is not what you are looking for there is a free section further away from the restaurants. Be sure to bring a towel if you are planning on using this area during peak months as it can get rocky. The water is crystal clear with a clean sandy bottom, and even features a long rock breakwater structure that you can swim out to and jump off of. If you choose to explore the rock features beware of sea urchins! After a long day at the beach there are many local restaurants to grab food and drinks, and even beachfront restaurants and concessions depending on your preference.
Anzio Beach
To get to Anzio beach, take the train from your chosen station in Rome and get off at "Anzio". There are two beaches around the same walking distance (10-15 min) from the train station; the one tagged on the map as "Anzio Beach" is the larger more tourist accessible beach. The better beach nearby (pictured below) is near "Grotte di Nerone", but be respectful as this is more of a local and quieter spot. This beach is perfect for snorkeling near the rock structures and bathing in the shallow water as most of the beach is a sand bar. This one takes a little longer to get to from Rome but it is my personal favorite!
Santa Severa
Santa Severa is a unique beach in that it features a historical castle that can be seen and explored from the inside for 8€. To get to this beach by train just get on at any Roman station and get off at the station "Santa Severa" using your Trenitalia app. This station will get you within a 15 minute walk of the beach and a tour of a rural Italian neighborhood. This beach is quieter than some of the other more touristy beaches but still boasts crystal clear water and comfortable sand bottom. There is only one restaurant on the beach with limited options and there aren't others within walking distance, so any specific snacks or drinks you need I would plan to bring them!
Ostia Beach
Take the train from your chosen Rome station to the "Ostia Lido Centro" station. From there the public beach is just a short walk through the small town, bringing you to the large and sandy Ostia Beach. Depending on the season large sections of the sand will be paid chairs, but there are still small public sections of the beach that are free. There are many restaurants and much to do within a short walking distance!
Ladispoli Beach
Ladispoli beach is a black sand beach that is one of the closest in proximity to the Rome area. By taking the train to the "Ladispoli-Cervatari" station, you are within a 10-15 minute walk of this gorgeous beach. This is a spacious beach with a close proximity to local restaurants and shops which is also perfect for families with small children. This beach can get crowded at times depending on the month, but there is plenty of space to spread out!
