Eixample
As the plane begins its descent on Barcelona, you will see below you, in the middle of the city, a grid of square blocks.
This is the Eixample, a neighbourhood that is unique in the world in its structure, its attractions, its shopping and much more. A neighbourhood that alone is worth a trip to Barcelona! (Obviously one of my favourites).
This is the central, largest and most populous neighbourhood of the Catalan capital, which in turn is divided into 6 districts: Dreta de l'Eixample, Antiga Esquerra de l'Eixample, Nova Esquerra de l'Eixample, Fort Pienc, Sagrada Familia and Sant Antoni.
It was built by an architect named Ildefons Cerdá, a visionary who decided in the mid-19th century that the city centre, which was expanding at the time, should be a welcoming and egalitarian place where everyone had the same place to live and where light was the main factor.
The result is a street network lined with extremely elegant buildings.
