Day Trips From Marrakech

Day Trips From Marrakech

So you've booked your trip to Marrakech and you want to get outside of the city and see more of Morocco while you are here but you don't have a bunch of days to go on a wild Moroccan adventure (I do suggest that if you have the opportunity, you come back and take a wild multi-week adventure across Morocco because there is just so much to see)... but back to reality. Where can you go on a day trip from Marrakech? That's what this handy-dandy little guide is here for!

Not Day Trips

Ok, so before we get started let's talk about where you cannot go on a day trip (and where you could technically go, but shouldn't).

1. The Sahara Desert.

Sorry - there is no day-tripping to the Sahara from Marrakech (or really most places in Morocco), it's just too far away. I get it, you looked at a map and said "Look how close we'll be to the Sahara Desert" and that is true, compared to where you live you will be insanely close the Sahara. Just not day trip close. The nearest adventure in the Sahara desert is nearly 8 hours drive. Each way. You can technically do this as a two day trip - but I don't suggest that either. Way too much driving and not enough time to enjoy yourself.

2. Fes, Meknes, Chefchaouen, Tangier.

Again, way too far to do as a day trip.

You could get to Casablanca for a day trip

...but honestly, unless you are studying the architecture of modern mosques in school, it's just not worth it. Casablanca has some cool stuff to see, but not the drive hours to get there and drive hours to get back kind of cool. Note that this is my personal opinion and if you realy want to take a day trip to Casablanca you can. On the highway it is only a little over two hours drive each way.

And now on to the main event: the best day trips from Marrakech

Essaouira

Essaouira is a charming coastal town that makes for a fantastic day trip from Marrakech. It's about a 2.5-hour drive, but the journey is part of the adventure, passing through the beautiful Moroccan countryside. Essaouira has a rich history, having been a major trading post and home to a diverse mix of cultures over the centuries. The town is known for its well-preserved medina, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through its narrow streets, you’ll see vibrant blue and white buildings, bustling markets, and friendly locals.

One of the highlights of Essaouira is its stunning beach and historic port. You can watch the fishermen bring in their daily catch or take a leisurely stroll along the harbor. The city walls and the Skala de la Ville, an old fortification, offer amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean and are perfect for photography enthusiasts. If you’re into art, Essaouira has a thriving art scene with numerous galleries showcasing local talent. For a relaxing day, you can enjoy fresh seafood at one of the seaside restaurants while listening to the sound of waves.

@iamrwood
Let me tell you about Ouzoud Falls – it's like nature's hidden gem in Morocco. These majestic waterfalls are famous for their sheer beauty and the feeling of awe they inspire. As one of the most visited natural attractions in Morocco, they draw travelers from all over the world. But beyond their fame, there's a sense of tranquility and serenity that envelops you as you stand in front of the cascading waters. You can take a hike down to the base of the falls, feeling the mist on your face as you get closer. And when you reach the bottom, you're greeted by the sight of the cascading water and the sound of it crashing against the rocks. There are even boats at the bottom where, for a small fee, a local will paddle you out into the mist of the falls. It's a moment that stays with you long after you leave.

Many visitors choose to end their day with a traditional Moroccan dinner in a desert camp, complete with music and dancing under the stars. It's a perfect way to experience the beauty and serenity of the Moroccan desert without traveling too far from Marrakech.

Agafay
@iamrwood
Agafay is the only desert you can day trip to from Marrakech, but it is important to understand it is not the Sahara. There are no sand dunes in this desert. (And any tour company that says there are - or shows photos of sand dunes to sell you on an excursion - are outright lying to you.) But that is not to say that you won't have an amazing experience! You can ride a camel at sunset or feel the thrill of quad biking through the desert hills. You can book a dinner with a music show and even spend the night in a Berber-style camp. If you only have a day to spare, Agafay can be an amazing adventure
