Day Trips From Marrakech
Not Day Trips
Ok, so before we get started let's talk about where you cannot go on a day trip (and where you could technically go, but shouldn't).
1. The Sahara Desert.
Sorry - there is no day-tripping to the Sahara from Marrakech (or really most places in Morocco), it's just too far away. I get it, you looked at a map and said "Look how close we'll be to the Sahara Desert" and that is true, compared to where you live you will be insanely close the Sahara. Just not day trip close. The nearest adventure in the Sahara desert is nearly 8 hours drive. Each way. You can technically do this as a two day trip - but I don't suggest that either. Way too much driving and not enough time to enjoy yourself.
2. Fes, Meknes, Chefchaouen, Tangier.
Again, way too far to do as a day trip.
You could get to Casablanca for a day trip
...but honestly, unless you are studying the architecture of modern mosques in school, it's just not worth it. Casablanca has some cool stuff to see, but not the drive hours to get there and drive hours to get back kind of cool. Note that this is my personal opinion and if you realy want to take a day trip to Casablanca you can. On the highway it is only a little over two hours drive each way.
And now on to the main event: the best day trips from Marrakech
Essaouira
Essaouira is a charming coastal town that makes for a fantastic day trip from Marrakech. It's about a 2.5-hour drive, but the journey is part of the adventure, passing through the beautiful Moroccan countryside. Essaouira has a rich history, having been a major trading post and home to a diverse mix of cultures over the centuries. The town is known for its well-preserved medina, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through its narrow streets, you’ll see vibrant blue and white buildings, bustling markets, and friendly locals.
One of the highlights of Essaouira is its stunning beach and historic port. You can watch the fishermen bring in their daily catch or take a leisurely stroll along the harbor. The city walls and the Skala de la Ville, an old fortification, offer amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean and are perfect for photography enthusiasts. If you’re into art, Essaouira has a thriving art scene with numerous galleries showcasing local talent. For a relaxing day, you can enjoy fresh seafood at one of the seaside restaurants while listening to the sound of waves.
The Ourika Valley
Just an hour's drive from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley is a wonderful escape into nature. Nestled in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, this valley is known for its picturesque landscapes, traditional Berber villages, and lush greenery. The drive itself is scenic, winding through olive groves and orchards, with the stunning backdrop of snow-capped peaks in the distance. The Ourika River flows through the valley, providing a refreshing contrast to the arid surroundings of Marrakech.
A visit to the Ourika Valley is not complete without exploring its famous waterfalls. The Setti Fatma Waterfalls are a series of cascades that are popular for hiking. The trek up to the waterfalls can be a bit challenging but is well worth the effort for the breathtaking views and the opportunity to cool off in the clear mountain water. Along the way, you can stop at traditional Berber houses to experience local hospitality and learn about their way of life. There are also plenty of riverside cafés where you can relax and enjoy a traditional Moroccan mint tea.
Ouzoud Waterfalls
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are one of the most beautiful natural sights in Morocco, and they’re just about a 2.5-hour drive from Marrakech. These waterfalls are the highest in North Africa, dropping over 100 meters into a gorge below. As you approach, the sound of rushing water and the lush greenery create a serene atmosphere that’s perfect for a day of relaxation and exploration. The area is home to Barbary macaques, and it’s common to see these playful monkeys around the falls.
A visit to Ouzoud Waterfalls offers several activities. You can take a boat ride to get up close to the base of the falls or hike the surrounding trails for various viewpoints that offer spectacular photo opportunities. There are also small restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy traditional Moroccan dishes while taking in the stunning scenery. If you’re adventurous, you can even take a dip in the natural pools formed by the falls. It’s a refreshing break from the heat and hustle of Marrakech, and the natural beauty of Ouzoud is truly unforgettable.
Ait Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate
A day trip to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate is like stepping back in time. It’s a bit of a drive, taking around 3.5 hours from Marrakech, but the journey through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass is spectacular. Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved ksars in Morocco. This ancient fortified village has been the backdrop for many famous films and TV shows, including “Gladiator” and “Game of Thrones.”
Exploring Ait Ben Haddou, you’ll wander through narrow alleyways and climb to the top for panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscape. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Morocco’s architectural heritage. Nearby Ouarzazate, often called the "Gateway to the Sahara," is known for its film studios and the impressive Taourirt Kasbah. You can tour the studios to see sets from famous movies or explore the kasbah to learn about the history and culture of the region. It’s a full day of adventure, history, and cinematic magic.
Lake Lalla Takerkoust
Just a 45-minute drive from Marrakech, Lake Lalla Takerkoust is a perfect spot for a peaceful day out. This artificial lake was created to provide water to the surrounding area but has become a popular recreational spot. The lake is surrounded by stunning scenery, with the Atlas Mountains in the background, making it a great place to unwind and enjoy nature.
There are several activities to enjoy at Lake Lalla Takerkoust. You can rent a paddleboat or kayak to explore the calm waters or simply relax on the shore with a picnic. For those who enjoy a bit more excitement, there are opportunities for jet skiing and quad biking around the lake. The area also has some charming lakeside cafés where you can enjoy a meal with a view. It’s an easy and enjoyable escape from the city, perfect for a relaxing day.
The Agafay Desert
The Agafay Desert, just an hour from Marrakech, offers a unique desert experience without the long journey to the Sahara. This rocky desert landscape is dotted with sparse vegetation and provides a stunning contrast to the city. It's an ideal destination for those who want to experience the tranquility of the desert and enjoy some adventure activities.
In the Agafay Desert, you can go camel riding, take a quad bike tour, or enjoy a guided hike to explore the rugged terrain. The desert is particularly beautiful at sunset when the changing colors of the sky create a magical atmosphere. Many visitors choose to end their day with a traditional Moroccan dinner in a desert camp, complete with music and dancing under the stars. It's a perfect way to experience the beauty and serenity of the Moroccan desert without traveling too far from Marrakech.
The Atlas Mountains
The Atlas Mountains are a majestic range stretching across Morocco, offering stunning landscapes and a peek into Berber culture. Destinations like Imlil, Amizmiz, and Tahanaout are all within a couple of hours’ drive from Marrakech. Imlil is the gateway to Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, and is popular for trekking. The village itself is charming, with simple guesthouses and local markets where you can buy traditional crafts.
Amizmiz and Tahanaout are smaller, less touristy villages that offer a more authentic experience of Berber life. In these villages, you can visit local souks, hike through terraced fields, and even participate in traditional cooking classes. The people here are incredibly welcoming, and it’s a great opportunity to learn about their customs and daily life. The Atlas Mountains are perfect for those who love nature and want to experience the beauty and culture of rural Morocco.
Oukaimden
Oukaimden is a surprising gem just a couple of hours from Marrakech. Known as Morocco’s premier ski resort, Oukaimden offers a unique experience for visitors. During the winter months, the snow-covered slopes attract skiers and snowboarders, while the summer months transform the area into a beautiful hiking destination. The views from the top are breathtaking, with the Atlas Mountains stretching out in every direction.
Besides skiing and hiking, Oukaimden is also known for its prehistoric rock carvings, which are among the oldest in Africa. These carvings, found on the slopes of Jebel Oukaimden, depict scenes of hunting and daily life from thousands of years ago. It’s a fascinating site for history buffs and adds an extra layer of interest to a visit here. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or exploring ancient history, Oukaimden offers a unique and memorable day trip from Marrakech.
Where ever you choose to go for your day trip, Morocco will definitely leave an impression on you!
