Exploring Mexico's Hidden Vineyards: A Guide to Baja California Wine Country
Day 1: Arrival
Getting there
Since I was traveling from Florida, I opted to fly into Tijuana. For those on the U.S. West Coast, driving down is a great option. If you're coming from San Diego, it's an easy 2-hour drive to Valle de Guadalupe. Just be prepared for tolls, which will cost around $7 each way. If you choose to rent a car, weekend rates typically range from $50 to $100, depending on the type of vehicle and rental company.
Arrival in Tijuana
I landed in Tijuana around noon, picked up my rental car, and started the scenic drive to Valle de Guadalupe. The journey took about 1.5 hours, with stunning coastal views and rolling vineyards along the way.
Check-In and Wine Tasting
I arrived at La Cima del Valle hotel by 3:30 pm, a tranquil retreat nestled in the heart of wine country. After checking in, I headed straight to Vena Cava Winery for a private wine-tasting experience. The unique setting and exceptional wines made for the perfect introduction to the region. Afterward, I returned to the hotel to relax and soak in the peaceful ambiance for the rest of the evening.
Day 2: Exploring Ensenada and a Bit of Baja’s History
Morning Adventure
A Taste of History
Feeling refreshed, our next stop was Bar Andaluz, the birthplace of the original margarita. Sipping on a classic cocktail in such a historic setting added a perfect touch to the day. By 1 PM, it was time to head back to the hotel to get ready for the wedding I was attending that afternoon.
If You Have More Time:
Had I not been on a tight schedule, I would have loved to visit Pai Pai Ecotourism Park. This park offers a range of activities like interacting with exotic animals, hiking through scenic trails, and learning about local conservation efforts. It’s a great spot for those looking to connect with nature and experience the unique wildlife of the region.
Day 3: Scenic Brunch and a Memorable Dinner
Morning
Afternoon
After brunch, I headed back to Valle de Guadalupe and checked into Casa Entrevez, a charming family-owned property with its vineyard. As the only guest at the time, I was greeted with a complimentary glass of their house wine, which I enjoyed while unwinding at the hotel.

Day 4: Return Home
On the final day of my trip, I drove back to Tijuana to return my rental car. With my flight scheduled for noon, I made sure to give myself plenty of time to return the car and get through airport security. The journey was smooth, and I reflected on the incredible experiences from the past few days as I prepared to board my flight back home.
