Balkans!
They’ve stolen my heart. From my first backpacking trip back in 2019 until now, this region has never ceased to amaze me. There’s something magnetic about the people, landscapes, and history that makes it impossible to stay away! This time, I took a short (let’s be honest, no vacation ever feels long enough, right?) yet unforgettable road trip through Kosovo and North Macedonia. It was a 5-day journey filled with everything I love about travel: new sights, incredible food, and moments that just make you stop and appreciate where you are.
Here’s a glimpse of this adventure—a trip that left me dreaming of returning before I’d even left!
Pristina: The Heart of Kosovo
Our journey kicked off in Pristina, Kosovo's lively capital. This city is a mix of history, modernity, and a heartbeat that you feel in the streets. From cozy cafés to vibrant markets, Pristina is a warm welcome into the Balkans.
First Impressions:
First Impressions:
Arriving at Pristina Airport, the excitement started to bubble over. This city has a unique energy—there’s a story in every corner, from the statues to the architecture. Checking into Pristina Backpackers, a cozy, budget-friendly hostel, I felt instantly at home.
One thing that surprised and delighted me? The locals' genuine curiosity and warmth, especially toward Indians! They absolutely love meeting travelers from India and are often eager to learn more about us.
There’s something so heartwarming about being in a place where the people are just as interested in you as you are in them. Conversations sparked easily, and it wasn’t long before we were swapping stories and sharing laughs with new friends.
Highlights of Pristina:
- Strolling through the lively streets, absorbing the culture.
- Savoring delicious, affordable meals (think €7-10 for a satisfying plate of local cuisine).
- Meeting locals who are as warm as the city itself.
After a day soaking in Pristina’s charm, it was time to gear up for the drive toward North Macedonia, with plenty of memorable stops on the way!
Skopje: Where History and Modernity Meet
Crossing into North Macedonia, Skopje welcomed us with open arms. It was an incredible road to drive. Curvy, mountainy and Adventury ;) And This city has a bit of everything: Ottoman influences, modern vibes, and landmarks that make you stop in awe.
Why Skopje Stole My Heart:
Why Skopje Stole My Heart:
Skopje blends the old and new with a unique style. Here, the currency shifts to Macedonian Dinar (1 Euro ≈ 60 MKD), so keep some cash handy for smooth transactions. We chose a cozy Airbnb (between €18-25 a night), and honestly, it was the perfect base to explore everything Skopje has to offer.
Can’t-Miss Experiences in Skopje:
- Gracanica Monastery and Bear Sanctuary: On the drive down, we stopped at this peaceful monastery and a heartwarming sanctuary for rescued bears. Both stops felt like hidden gems, tucked away from the usual tourist trails.
- The Millennium Cross: Towering above the city, this iconic spot gave us a sunset view I won’t soon forget. It’s one of those moments where you realize just how beautiful the world can be.
- Matka Canyon: A haven for nature lovers! We took a boat ride, explored the caves, and simply soaked in the serenity. If you go, try to make a day of it—it’s worth every second.
Reflections on the Road
This short trip left a big impression. From the warmth of Pristina to the scenic landscapes of North Macedonia, the Balkans reminded me why I keep coming back. Every place has a story to tell, and every journey reveals a bit more of the region’s soul.
A Few Tips for Future Travelers:
- Currency: Euros in Kosovo, Macedonian Denars in North Macedonia (1 Euro ≈ 60 MKD).
- Pack Smart: Good walking shoes, a light jacket for cool evenings, and a power bank to capture every moment.
- Travel Time: Spring and early fall offer the best weather, avoiding the crowds but with all the beauty.
- Car Rental Caution: If you’re renting a car locally, be cautious with insurance. Even if you’ve opted for full insurance in advance, local vendors may insist on additional insurance fees on arrival. Be prepared, as it’s a common situation here.

Absolutely. The Balkans may be small on a map, but they’re packed with beauty, history, and heart. I left feeling that familiar pull that will surely bring me back someday soon. If you’re ready for a mix of adventure, culture, and soul-soothing landscapes, add this trip to your list—you won’t regret it!
